In this work, the impacts of TENORM (Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occuring Radioactive Materials) from fertilizer on soil and vegetable were estimated. The activity concentration of the natural radionuclides and then the annual effective dose rate due to ingestion of vegetable in the crops using fertilizers at the agricultural zone of Hoc Mon, Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam were investigated.

The beta-particle emission from a sediment or rock sample can be measured very precisely using beta-counting instruments. The observed count rate is largely a function of the radionuclide concentration in the sample, so has the potential to provide a precise estimate of the natural radiation dose rate.

High levels of environmental radioactivity are caused by the composition of minerals in the earth’s crust and the impact of prospection and utilization of natural sources, mainly due to the presence of 40K and radionuclides of 238U and 232Th series. Radium equivalent activity (RaEq) was calculated to assess the risk associated with primordial radionuclides.

The aim of this study was to determine natural radioactive and heavy element concentrations in Mersin drinking water samples before the commissioning of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant and to collect data for possible environmental contaminations in the future. Drinking water samples were taken from the provincial center, districts, and populated villages. The annual effective dose of natural radionuclides and cancer risks were calculated for each person living in the city. Hazard index and cancer risk were calculated, which were caused by heavy elements.

238U, 234U, 228Ra and 226Ra radioisotopes are always existed in nature materials as well as in under groundwater. It is poison when they entered to human body and their radio-activity is assessed from mBq/l to kBq/l by WHO and UNSCEAR. Their radio-activity is high but the concentration of them is very low, and when simultaneous spectral measurement will be gotten interference, so it is difficult to precisely determine by conventional methods.

Results of the first investigation of the activity concentration of the surface soil samples collected at various locations of Thoulakhom district of Vientiane province of Laos People's Democratic Republic (PDR) are presented in this work. The activity concentration of the natural radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the soil samples were determined by gamma spectrometer using a highenergy resolution semiconductor detector HPGe.

Inducing calcium carbonate precipitation is another important function of urease in nature. The process takes advantage of the supply of carbonate ions derived from urea hydrolysis and of an increase in pH generated by the reaction, effects that in the presence of Ca2+ ions lead to the precipitation of CaCO3.

The distribution of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in 70 granite samples obtained from 13 Western Anatolian plutons (Turkey) was measured by using γ-ray spectroscopy. The activities of the measured radionuclides varied up to 259 Bq kg–1 for 226Ra, up to 241 Bq kg–1 for 232Th, and up to 2518 Bq kg–1 for 40K, with mean values of 66 (±44), 90 (±47), and 1097 (±410) Bq kg–1, respectively, which are smaller than the mean values given for granites worldwide.

The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K from 102 building materials samples were determined using a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. The activity concentrations were evaluated for possible radiological hazards to the human health. The excess lifetime cancer risks (ELCR) were also estimated, and the average values were recorded as 0.42 ± 0.24 103 , 3.22 ± 1.83 103 , and 3.65 ± 1.85 103 for outdoor, indoor, and total ELCR respectively.

The proliferation resistance (PR) of Th/U and Th/Pu fuels used in CANada Deuterium Uranium for the deep geological repository was assessed by combining the multiattribute utility analysis proposed by Chirayath et al., 2015 [1] with the transport model of radionuclides in the repository and comparing with that of the used natural U fuel case. It was found that there was no significant advantage for Th/U and Th/ Pu fuels from the viewpoint of the PR in the repository.

The cross-sections for the formation of 89Nb and 90Nb radionuclides in proton induced nuclear reactions on zirconium were measured by using the well known activation method. The natural zirconium (natZr) target and copper (natCu) monitor foils were irradiated by 27.7 MeV proton beam at the MC50 Cyclotron of the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Science (KIRAMS), Korea. The induced gamma activities of the reaction products were measured by a coaxial high purity germanium (HPGe) detector coupled to a PC-based multichannel analyzer.

During my career, some 35 years, there has been a growing realization that the goal of successful nuclear waste management and the final disposal of long-lived radionuclides can only be attained by a thorough understanding of the behavior of key, technogenic radionuclides in the environment. Within a nuclear reactor, these radionuclides are created by fission, neutron capture and subsequent beta-decay reactions on actinides, mainly 238 U, and by activation nuclear reactions.
