  • A little note For some time now I have been bothered by the question of what constitutes an event. Yes, I have been bothered and the bother has made me prick up my ears to listen out for theories of the event. I have been listening, but I've also been looking, and in listening and looking I have found that...

  • We identified 39 funds for which direct support was provided and a no-action letter was not requested. We also noted numerous funds for which a no-action request was made but no support was subsequently disclosed. By reviewing the financial statements, we obtain additional information on the nature and amount of support on an ex post basis. Finally, as previously noted, our data set focuses only on direct support to U.S.

  • As the program and concept of family planning grew more accepted, demand grew for other types of contraception, resulting in a pioneering project that used CHWs to deliver Depo Provera injections to their clients in their homes. The community-based distribution program proved so successful, it expanded from its initial three sites to 72 by the mid-1990s. Door-to-door delivery, however, is a costly and time-consuming approach to delivering family planning services. In 1991 Pathfinder’s projects in Bangladesh began to move toward a more sustainable village-based depot approach.

  • Dictionaries and scholars have offered a variety of definitions. The Merriam-Webster dictionary offers a definition of the term: "the practical application of knowledge especially in a particular area" and "a capability given by the practical application of knowledge".[6] Ursula Franklin, in her 1989 "Real World of Technology" lecture, gave another definition of the concept; it is "practice, the way we do things around here".[7] The term is often used to imply a specific field of technology, or to refer to high technology or just consumer electronics, rather than technology as a whole.

  • It is necessary to have a (large) annotated corpus to build a statistical parser. Acquisition of such a corpus is costly and time-consuming. This paper presents a method to reduce this demand using active learning, which selects what samples to annotate, instead of annotating blindly the whole training corpus. Sample selection for annotation is based upon “representativeness” and “usefulness”. A model-based distance is proposed to measure the difference of two sentences and their most likely parse trees.

  • This publication sheds light on the issue of decentralisation in Mexico. It shows that decentralisation can make decision-making more efficient and increase local participation in development issues. Decentralisation can provide a better framework to improve local infrastructure and to channel the necessary finance from public and private sources. The modernisation of infrastructure systems in Mexico's cities and regions would improve the quality of life and stimulate economic development, thus fostering entrepreneurship and employment.

  • This paper studied the effects of Co, Ni replacement in the Fe1-xCoxFe2O4 and Fe1-yNiyFe2O4 (x, y = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5) nanoparticles, pH, weight of nanoparticles/ml of water and time of stirring on the arsenic removal ability. The results showed that small amount of 0.25 g/l of Fe3O4 nanoparticles after stirring time of 3 minutes can reduce the arsenic concentration from 0.1 mg/l to 0.01 mg/l. The removal was also affected by the pH of the water.

  • A computer program for synthesizing Japanese fundamental frequency contours implements our theory of Japanese intonation. This theory provides a complete qualitative description of the known characteristics of Japanese intonation, as well as a quantitative model of tone-scaling and timing precise enough to translate straightforwardly into a computational algorithm. An important aspect of the description is that various features of the intonation pattern are designated to be phonological properties of different types of phrasal units in a hierarchical organization.

  • Climate change is a natural and continuous process. But recent relatively rapid change in climate occurs due to anthropogenic activities which makes alarming attention because it contributes largely to global warming by affecting the greenhouse gases (GHGs) and aerosols. GHGs mainly CO2, methane, nitrous oxide CFC11, CFC12, HCFC22and HFC23 with different global warming potential accumulate in atmosphere and increase in concentration over time creating the so called “greenhouse effect”.

  • In this research, Mg-Al hydrotalcite compounds (HTs) are fabricated by constant pH at low supersaturation method. The prepared HTs act as solid base catalysts for the transformation of glucose to fructose in water medium. The activities of catalysts are monitored versus reaction temperature and time to find the optimum conditions. Under 120 oC and 20 min, the best catalyst is HT5 with maximum fructose yield of 16.3 %. The HT5 catalyst is tested for the heterogeneous nature and recyclability.

  • This paper develops a finite time-horizon fuzzy multi-deteriorating inventory model with/without shortage, where the demand increases linearly with time. Here, the total profit is to be maximized under the limitation on investment. In this problem, total profit, total investment cost and the time-horizon are fuzzy in nature. The impreciseness in the above objective and constraint goals have been expressed by fuzzy linear/nonlinear membership functions and vagueness in time-horizon by different types of fuzzy numbers. Results are illustrated with numerical examples.

  • During the last thirty years of his life, Albert Einstein sought relentlessly for a so-called unified field theory—a theory capable of describing nature's forces within a single, all-encompassing, coherent framework. Einstein was not motivated by the things we often associate with scientific undertakings, such as trying to explain this or that piece of experimental data. Instead, he was driven by a passionate belief that the deepest understanding of the universe would reveal its truest wonder: the simplicity and power of the principles on which it is based.
