  • Chapter summary: The network topology is the pattern used to connect computers and other devices with the cable or other network medium; the three primary LAN topologies are bus, star, and ring; UTP cable in the star topology is the most common network medium used today; a network interface adapter provides the interface that enables a computer to connect to a network; the network interface adapter and its driver implement the data-link layer protocol on the computer; hubs are devices that connect computers on a star or ring network.

  • The system’s architecture is based on an original design that constitutes a vNIC, a physical network interface card (pNIC), and a software. The vNIC creates the virtual host, while the relay system manages the software. Thus, pNIC provides an interface between the physical layer and the software layer. Finally, we conduct empirical testing of the proposed system’s viability using real-life Internet-based research. The results show that our proposed system performs effectively and has good operability.

  • Chapter 2 - Network hardware. The layered model that dominated data communication and networking literature before 1990 was the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. Everyone believed that the OSI model would become the ultimate standard for data communications - but this did not happen. The TCP/IP protocol suite became the dominant commercial architecture because it was used and tested extensively in the Internet; the OSI model was never fully implemented. In this chapter, we first briefly discuss the OSI model and then we concentrate on TCP/IP as a protocol suite.

  • The increasing percentage of digital designers and digital layout experts in the engineering population reflects the directions that our industry is headed. Although the emphasis on digital design is providing significant advances in electronics end products, there is still and will always be a portion of circuit design that interfaces with the analog or real world. There is some similarity in layout strategies between these two domains, but the differences can make an easy circuit layout design less than optimum when trying to achieve good results.

  • Chapter 2 - Application layer. In this chapter we study the conceptual and implementation aspects of network applications. We begin by defining key application-layer concepts, including network services required by applications, clients and servers, processes, and transport-layer interfaces. We examine several network applications in detail, including the Web, e-mail, DNS, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution.

  • Chapter 6 - Network layer protocols. Chapter summary: Network layer protocols are responsible for end-to-end communications across the network; IP is a connectionless protocol that encapsulates transport layer data into datagrams; IPX is a proprietary standard that performs routing, addressing, and protocol identification; NetBIOS Extended User Interface (NetBEUI) is used by small Windows networks for LAN networking; AppleTalk provides basic networking to small networks.

  • The Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS)is an international standard developed by CableLabs, a non-profit research and development consortium for cable-related technologies. • DOCSIS specifies the OSI Layer 1 and Layer 2 requirements: Physical layer-For data signals that the cable operator can use, DOCSIS specifies the channel widths (bandwidths of each channel) as 200 kHz, 400 kHz, 800 kHz, 1.6 MHz, 3.2 MHz, and 6.4 MHz. DOCSIS also specifies modulation techniques (the way to use the RF signal to convey digital data).

  • A modem computer consists of one or more processors, some main memory, disks, printers, a keyboard, a mouse, a display, network interfaces, and various other input/output devices. All in all, a complex system. If every application programmer had to understand how all these things work in detail, no code would ever get written. Furthermore, managing all these components and using them optimally is an exceedingly challenging job.

  • Frame Relay is a standardized wide area network technology that specifies the physical and logical link layers of digital telecommunications channels using a packet switching methodology. Originally designed for transport across Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) infrastructure, it may be used today in the context of many other network interfaces. Network providers commonly implement Frame Relay for voice (VoFR) and data as an encapsulation technique, used between local area networks (LANs) over a wide area network (WAN).

  • CDP discovers and shows information about directly connected Cisco devices, including routers and switches. CDP is a Cisco proprietary protocol that runs at the data link layer of the OSI model. The data link layer is Layer 2 of the OSI model. This allows devices that may be running different network Layer 3 protocols, such as IP or IPX, to learn about each other. CDP begins automatically upon a device system startup. However, if Cisco IOS Release 10.3 or a newer version is used, CDP must be enabled on each of the device interfaces. Enable CDP by using the cdp enable command.

  • This lab focuses on configuring a basic router-to-router WAN and then troubleshooting Layer 1 cabling problems and workstation Layer 3 IP addressing problems. Note: The two routers need to be preconfigured by the instructor or lab assistant to have the correct IP addresses on their LAN and WAN interfaces. Router A will provide the clocking signal as DCE. Use the prior lab “Basic Routed WAN” to set up this lab prior to starting the troubleshooting.
