Neutron imaging

In this paper, we present the results of computation for design of a new neutron imaging facility located at channel No. 3 of the Dalat Reactor. The design has two main parts: The neutron beam collimator and the radiation safety system. For the neutron beam collimator, the computational parameters such as neutron flux, cadmium ratio as well as ratio of neutron dose/gamma dose are reported.

Scintillator based coded-aperture imaging has proven to be effective when applied for X- and gamma-ray detection. Adaptation of the same method for neutron imaging has resulted in a number of propitious systems, which could be potentially employed for neutron detection in security and nuclear decommissioning applications.

The development of highly pixelated fast Medipix/Timepix readout enabled a large number of novel hybrid detectors, where incoming particles/photons are initially converted into a measureable charge, typically exceeding 1000 electrons. Among those possible converters are Microchannel plate (MCP) electron multipliers, which provide some unique capabilities when combined with bare Medipix/Timepix readout.

The neutron tomography, although lower in spatial resolution compared with the X-ray synchrotron tomography and requiring higher acquisition time, is sensitive to the phase chemistry, and has the potential to study engineering size components. Bragg edge neutron transmission imaging allows for the mapping of two-dimensional elastic strains and was used to identify the fatigue crack from the reduction in the strain in the region where the crack propagated.

In this article, K2GdF5 substance was doped by various Tb3+ ion with concentrations 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 mol%, and the materials were synthesized by the solid state reaction method. The K2GdF5 material had orthorhombic structure of Pnam symmetry with the wrinkled surface structure shown on SEM images.
