Ebook "Shallow lakes in a changing world: Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Shallow Lakes, held at Dalfsen, The Netherlands, 5–9 June 2005" have given us deeper insights into the functioning of food-webs in shallow waters, nutrient dynamics in open water, and in the complexities of interactions in littoral and pelagic regions, and of the sedimentwater interphase. We are now starting to implement the knowledge gained in order to rehabilitate some lakes, if not restore them.

In this study, we amended the loamy soil in a ginger farm using bamboo biochars combined with organic fertiliser. We used the original and treated bamboo biochars at low and high application rates to evaluate mechanisms involved in N dynamics of both soil and plant using δ15N and gas exchange measurement.

The objective was to understand how the additional nutritional dynamics associated with crayfish influence the basil crop. Both fresh and dry basil plant weights were collected after harvest, followed by leaf nutrient analysis. Leaf chlorophyll content, water pH, nitrogen and temperature were measured periodically.

Fe(II)-montmorillonites (Fe(II)-MMTs) were prepared by mixing solutions of Fe(II) and montmorillonite at pH 3.5. Two different Fe(II)-MMTs were prepared and the ferrous iron contents were 40 mg/L and 80 mg/L. All samples were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, TGA, DSC, and nitrogen adsorption. By nitrogen adsorption, the pore size can be obtained in the pore diameter curve with average pore widths of 6.67 nm, 9.96 nm, and 17.07 nm, respectively.

Being a promising tropical woody oilseed crop, the evergreen and recurrent plants of Sacha Inchi (Plukenetia volubilis L.) has complex phenology and source–sink interactions. Carbon source–sink manipulations with control and two treatments (reduce source, ca. 10% mature leaf pruning; reduce sink, 10% fruitlet thinning) were conducted on 2.5-year-old field-grown P. volubilis plantation during the early-wet season in a seasonal tropical area.

Plants are always exposed to dynamic light. The photosynthetic light use efficiency of leaves is lower in dynamic light than in uniform irradiance. Research on the influence of environmental factors on dynamic photosynthesis is very limited. Nitrogen is critical for plants, especially for photosynthesis.
