Ebook "Radioactive particles in the environment" presents a series of papers covering sources and source term characterisation, methodologies for characterizing particles, and the impact of particles on the behaviour of radioactive particles in the environment. Sources covered include the Chernobyl accident, nuclear weapons accidents at Thule and Palomares accident, the discharges from Dounreay and Krashnoyarsk, and depleted uranium in Kosovo and Kuwait.

Ocean radiation monitoring and warning systems are essential in monitoring radioactive species' contamination levels in an oceanic environment and predicting the radioactive materials propagation caused by nuclear incidents in a marine area. Since the Fukushima nuclear disaster, different types of mobile radiation monitoring devices have been investigated based on modern technologies in electronic - communication.

Iodine is potentially one of the most hazardous fission products that can be released from the fuel of nuclear reactors during a severe accident. They undergo physical and chemical processes that govern their behavior in the containment, which play an important role in determining the amount of volatile iodine emitted to the containment environment.

The use of ground-based robotic systems for the characterisation of nuclear environments is reviewed. Almost since the dawn of the nuclear energy industry, man has somewhat inadvertently created environments in which access has been constrained primarily due to the risk posed by extreme levels of radiation exposure but also due to space constraints, and because of toxic and combustible atmospheres.

Thermocouples are one of the most widespread used sensors for temperature measurements in several applications, thanks to their robustness, low cost and ease of installation. However, when used in high temperature environments or in the presence of flames or elevated hot sources, the measurement can be affected, for example, by radiative exchanges to and from the ambient.

Authorities responding to nuclear security events have to be prepared for a situation in which a neutron source or nuclear material is out of regulatory control. In such a situation, handheld neutron detectors are used to search for neutron sources or nuclear material, during either an overt or a covert search.

In the case of a nuclear accident with a large release of the radionuclides into the environment, the main concern is exposure to the residents living in the vicinity of the accident site. This paper presents the development of a new thyroid monitor for such measurements and the results from phantom-based experiments.

Telescope detectors have long been studied for their capability of discriminating the type of radiation detected. Silicon is the most widely used material for solid-state detectors. However, in many nuclear physics experiments and medical applications, diamond offers significant advantages due to its outstanding features, such as a near tissue equivalence, high radiation hardness and reliable operation in harsh environments.

The removal of Sr, Cd, and Pb from nuclear and industrial waste is important as these are harmful to living organisms and the environment. Immobilization of these ions in a zeolite framework is a simple and suitable method. However, zeolites are easily dehydrated at high temperatures.

Managing radioactive waste must be carried out within a strict framework and with a constant requirement to protect human beings and the environment. A safety management of the radioactive material or waste (RAM or RW) unavoidably involves transportation activities by using robust safe and reliable packaging system.

Compared to proteins, glycans, and lipids, much less is known about RNAs on the cell surface. We develop a series of technologies to test for any nuclearencoded RNAs that are stably attached to the cell surface and exposed to the extracellular space, hereafter called membrane-associated extracellular RNAs (maxRNAs).

Sicily (Italy) hosts a “relict”, endemic population of the birds Alectoris graeca whitakeri commonly known as Sicilian Rock Partridge. In the last decades, due to the risk of restocking with other European and Asiatic species for hunting purpose, a study was carried out to investigate the potential risk of hybridisation. The mtDNA control-region and nuclear microsatellites were genotyped. Due to the importance of the species, samples were mainly characterized by feather and stool samples, and rarely by carcasses found in the environment, from year 2011 to 2012.
