  • The aim of the contribution is to provide an overview of current challenges related to the tritium. Tritium as a radioactive isotope is subjected to the regulation. It is produced artificially at some types of nuclear power plants as a by-product of the fission reaction. Knowledge of tritium behaviour and properties become important because it is used as fuel in tokamaks.

  • Each year, more than 10 thousand tons of spent fuels are discharged from nuclear power plants in the world. Heavy element nuclear fission reactions, at the origin of energy production, generate fission products of intermediary mass, some of them being considered nowadays as critical raw materials.

  • Criticality safety of fuel debris, particularly MCCI(Molten-Core-Concrete-Interaction) products, is one of the major safety issues for decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Criticality or subcriticality condition of the fuel debris is still uncertain; its composition, location, neutron moderation, etc. are not yet confirmed.

  • Ruthenium is one of the most radiotoxic fission products which can be released from fuel as ruthenium oxides in an air ingress accident at a nuclear power plant. In this study it was found that the transport of the released ruthenium oxides through a reactor coolant system into the containment building is significantly affected by the atmospheric conditions.

  • The present paper analyses the trends in the global development of nuclear energy, the political background of the RW disposal, types of radioactive wastes, and their burial in Russia. The results achieved allow improving the typical LRD model for managing international nuclear enterprises by limiting the influence of commercial interests.

  • We study the electron spin dynamics in 2D - quantum dots due to the hyperfine interaction with surrounding nuclear spins. The study shows that electron spin dynamics depends strongly on the initial state and polarization of the nuclear spin system. Obtained results has shown that electron spin dynamics is reproducible with initial randomly correlated states but depends on the individual initial tensor product state. The decay of electron spin does not have an exponential character, instead of it a power is given.

  • The article characterizes the electric power industry in the Arctic regions of Russia. The regions of the eastern zone of the Russian Arctic differ significantly in terms of centralization of power supply. Centralized electricity supply in this territory is represented by only a few isolated functioning energy centers: Norilsk in the north of Krasnoyarsk Territory, Chaun-Bilibinsky, Anadyrsky and Egvekinotsky in the Chukotka Autonomous Region. The Arctic and northern regions of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) are completely located in the decentralized power supply zone.

  • Today, most investigations of the plant metabolome tend to be based on either nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy or mass spectrometry (MS), with or without hyphenation with chromatography. Although less sensitive than MS, NMR provides a powerful complementary technique for the identification and quantification of metabolites in plant extracts.

  • The effects of nuclear data uncertainties are studied on a typical PWR fuel assembly model in the framework of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency UAM (Uncertainty Analysis in Modeling) expert working group. The “Fast Total Monte Carlo” method is applied on a model for the Monte Carlo transport and burnup code SERPENT. Uncertainties on k∞, reaction rates, two-group cross sections, inventory and local pin power density during burnup are obtained, due to transport cross sections for the actinides and fission products, fission yields and thermal scattering data.

  • The funding by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission of a research project to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and MCEER/University at Buffalo facilitated the writing of a soon-to-be-published NUREG on seismic isolation. Funding of MCEER by the National Science Foundation led to research products that provide the technical basis for a new section in ASCE Standard 4 on the seismic isolation of safety-related nuclear facilities.

  • In addition, damage caused by Ni two-step reactions was considered. Estimations were made for the annulus spacers in a CANDU reactor that are located axially along a fuel channel and made of Inconel X-750. The calculation results indicate that the transmutation gas production from the Ni two-step reactions is predominant as the effective full power year increases.

  • The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistorical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in travelling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale.

  • This introduction to nuclear physics provides an excellent basis for a core undergraduate course in this area. The authors show how simple models can provide an understanding of the properties of nuclei, both in their ground and excited states, and of the nature of nuclear reactions. They include chapters on nuclear fission, its application in nuclear power reactors, the role of nuclear physics in energy production and nucleosynthesis in stars.
