  • Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is the most common infectious cause of blindness and bacterial sexually transmitted infection worldwide. Ct strain-specific differences in clinical trachoma suggest that genetic polymorphisms in Ct may contribute to the observed variability in severity of clinical disease.

  • Distichiasis, an ocular disorder in which aberrant cilia (eyelashes) grow from the opening of the Meibomian glands of the eyelid, has been reported in Friesian horses. These misplaced cilia can cause discomfort, chronic keratitis, and corneal ulceration, potentially impacting vision due to corneal fibrosis, or, if secondary infection occurs, may lead to loss of the eye.

  • Tuberculosis is a systemic disease caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis killing up to 3 million people in the world every year. Nigeria is ranked as number ten among twenty-two high burden countries in the world. Ocular involvement is an extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis which has become more common with the advent of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

  • Eye is a complex and sensitive organ and is therefore more vulnerable to trauma and various infections. Indian population is vulnerable to infections of eye by virtue of subtropical climate, trauma and iatrogenic procedures. Infectious endophthalmitis is a threatening and potentially devastating intra ocular infection caused by an array of organisms.

  • Acinetobacter baumannii is a bacterial species capable of provoking several clinical manifestations and possessing several mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, besides adapting to adverse situations, thus enabling its permanence in health centers. The broad spectrum of infections caused by this species also includes eye infections, which may lead to a serious clinical outcome depending on the circumstances. Endophthalmitis is one of the most serious complications amongst ophthalmological infections, which can be caused by fungi and bacteria.

  • Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) is a common pathogen in ocular infection. Mutations contribute to drug resistance. We intended to identify mutations in genes within the quinolone resistance determining region (QRDR) of fluoroquinolone-resistant S. epidermidis ocular isolates and to study their phenotypic and genotypic correlation. A total of 50 phenotypically fluoroquinolones-resistant S. epidermidis isolates were studied. Fluoroquinolones susceptibility was evaluated by Kirby- Bauer disk diffusion method.

In an effort to gain insight into the pathogenesis of keratitis caused by HSV-1, we determined the expression patterns of the p63 and Bax proteins in the Staatens Seruminstitute Rabbit Cornea cell line (SIRC). Methods: SIRC cells were infected with HSV-1 at various multiplicities and maintained for different periods of time. Virus replication was measured by indirect immunofluorescence assay and Western blot analysis.
