The motion equation of a one-degree-of-freedom system when subjected to earthquakes is usually not solved by analytic methods. This problem can only be solved through the time step method, when integrating differential equations. This paper is devoted to presenting a numerical solution for a seismic analysis problem of a highway bridge pier with high damping rubber bearings under earthquakes.

It was demonstrated that Poly(p-Xylylene) (PPX) could be prepared from α,α’-Bis(Alkoxy or Aryloxy) –p-Xylenes via chemical vapor decomposition (CVD)- method. This is one-step process and there are side products by the CVD-process. This effect depends both on the CVD- condition and the properties of the starting monomer. The structure and thermal behavior of the material were characterized by FTIR, UVvis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, DTA and DSC.

The synthesis of 10 new phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) analogues with modifications in the phosphate and the carboxylate function is described. Included are two potential irreversible inhibitors of PEP-utilizing enzymes. One incorporates a reactive chloromethylphosphonate function replacing the phosphate group of PEP. The second contains a chloromethyl group substituting for the carboxylate function of PEP. An improved procedure for the preparation of the known (Z)- and (E)-3-chloro-PEP is also given.

The clinically used beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanic acid is produced by fermentation of Streptomyces clavuligerus. The orf6 gene of the clavulanic acid biosynthetic gene cluster in S. clavuligerus encodes a protein that shows sequence homology to ornithine acetyltransferase (OAT), the fifth enzyme of the arginine biosynthetic pathway. Orf6 was overexpressed in Escherichia coli (at 15% of total soluble protein by SDS/PAGE analysis) indicating it was not toxic to the host cells. The recombinant protein was purified (to 95% purity) by a one-step technique.

One-electron oxidation of six different c-type lysozymes from hen egg white, turkey egg white, human milk, horse milk, camel stomach and tortoise was studied by gamma-and pulse-radiolysis.In the first step, one tryptophan side chain is oxidized to indolyl free radical, which is produced quantitatively. As shown already, the indolyl radical subse-quently oxidizes a tyrosine side chain to the phenoxy radical in an intramolecular reaction. However this reaction is not total and its stoichiometry depends on the protein.Rate constants also vary between proteins, from 120Æs )1 to 1000Æs )1 at pH 7.

The thiamindiphosphate-dependent enzyme indolepyruvate decarboxylase catalyses the formationof indoleacetaldehyde from indolepyruvate, one step in the indolepyruvate path-way of biosynthesis of the plant hormone indole-3-acetic acid. The crystal structure of this enzyme fromEnterobacter cloacaehasbeendeterminedat 2.65 A˚ resolutionandrefined to a crystallographic R-factor of 20.5% (Rfree 23.6%). The subunit of indolepyruvate decarboxylase contains three domains of opena/btopology, whichare similar in structure to that of pyruvate decarboxylase. ...

Galactokinase (EC 2.7.1.6) catalyzes the first committed step in the catabolism of galactose. The sugar is phosphor-ylated at position 1 at the expense of ATP. Lack of fully functional galactokinase is one cause of the inherited disease galactosemia, the main clinical manifestation of which is early onset cataracts. Human galactokinase (GALK1) was expressed in and purified fromEscherichia coli. The recom-binant enzyme was both soluble and active.

This module explains the steps that are typically involved in the Web application design process, what role security considerations play in each of these steps, and finally, how these steps interrelate with one another. In this module, students will focus on the threat analysis step in the design process by identifying Web-accessible assets and the threats that are posed to those assets, and by calculating the exposure of those assets to those threats. Finally, students will learn about developing an implementation and maintenance plan for securing Web applications....
