These factors are important for banks to project how demand is likely to develop over time. After modelling the IB adoption decision across a sample of countries, we conduct a questionnaire amongst bank customers who include users and non-users of IB and set up focus groups, each comprising participants from a specific age bracket.

This is very convenient and the ready access to the Internet in all first-world countries, coupled with the cost savings from closing bank branches, is driving the deployment and adoption of these services. Purely online transactions, however, lead to increased risk. None of the normal safeguards of real-world transactions are present. Conversely, risk to the criminals is a lot lower (the attacker can be in a completely separate jurisdiction from all the other parties in the transaction) and the retailer sees nothing but a faceless, nameless connection providing card details.

For many millions of people the internet has become the preferred way of conducting many everyday transactions, from banking to booking a holiday. The internet is often faster, easier to use and more convenient, with services available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It has also become an important way of improving the delivery of public services. The government spends an estimated £208 million a year on delivering services and related information online, such as the renewal of vehicle excise duty, the filing of tax returns and for the matching of applicants to jobs.

Exchange houses are a principal means of sending money from the oil -producing countries in Western Asia. Some Indian states and private banks have established agreements with these exchange houses to facilitate the transfers of remittances. These transfers typically occur in an account-to-account manner, and are concentrated in the United Kingdom and the United States.
