  • Exposure of the OR staff to inhalational anesthetics has been proven by numerous investigators, but its potential adverse effect under the present technical circumstances is a debated issue. The aim of the present work was to test whether using a laminar flow air conditioning system exposure of the team to anesthetic gases is different if the anesthetist works in the sitting as compared to the standing position.

  • Indoor air contamination of the operating theatres is one of the major sources of life threatening nosocomial infections for patients undergoing certain surgical procedures. There is dearth of information on the burden of airborne microbial contaminations of operating theatres in this environment, hence the need for the study. The study aimed at investigating the airborne microbial load and type of pathogenic isolates as a result of surgical procedures in the operating theatres of a tertiary hospital in South-west Nigeria.

  • Electronic devices are increasingly used by the healthcare workers. They can get contaminated with pathogenic organisms and can act as a source of healthcare associated infections. In this study we aimed to determine the bacterial contamination rates of the electronic devices handled by the healthcare workers posted in high risk areas like ICU’s, NICU’s and operation theatres. Swabs were collected from personal electronic devices of 40 healthcare workers and from 33 common devices used in high risk areas.

  • Bacterial contamination of operation theatres is a major risk factor for increased incidence of surgical site and nosocomial infections in hospitals. Now a day the evaluation of the level of microbial air contamination in places at risk is considered to be a basic step towards prevention. The main aim of the study was to estimate microbial air contamination of operation theatres in our hospital by settle plate method (Passive sampling). Objective of the study was to monitor quality of air in the form of bacterial load in operation theatres.

  • Microbial contamination of operation theatres is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in post operative cases. The present study is to evaluate the microbial contamination of operation theatre and their antibiotic resistance pattern. This study was carried out from July 2018 to December 2018. Surface and article swabs were collected by using sterile cotton swabs moistened with nutrient broth and air samples were taken by settle plate method.

  • Microbial contamination of the Operation theatres (OT‟s) continues to increase the prevalence of nosocomial infections. Our study evaluates the microbial contamination using various air sampling techniques in OT‟s and find a suitable technique to assess air quality. A total 151 air samples were collected from various OT‟s of our tertiary care centre.76 samples were collected by an active method using an air slit sampler and 75 samples were collected by passive settle plate method using 5% Sheep blood agar in 9cm petri-plates.

  • Machine failure In the event of failure, some modern anaesthetic workstations may default to little or no flow, or oxygen only with no vapour. Users must know the default setting for the machine in use. Alternative means of oxygenation, ventilation and anaesthesia must be available. ‘Shared responsibility’ equipment As a member of the theatre team, the anaesthetist will share responsibility for the use of other equipment, e.g. diathermy, intermittent compression stockings, warming devices, cell salvage and tourniquets, but should have received appropriate training.

  • The following checks should be carried out at the beginning of each operating theatre session. In addition, specific checks should be carried out before each new patient during a session or when there is any alteration or addition to the breathing system, monitoring or ancillary equipment. It is the responsibility of the anaesthetist to make sure that these checks have been performed, and the anaesthetist must be satisfied that they have been carried out correctly.

  • For about the first ten years of its existence, cinema in the United States and elsewhere was mainly a trick and a gadget. Before 1896 the coin-operated Kinematograph of Edison was present at many fairs and in many entertainment venues. Spectators had to throw a coin in the machine and peek through glasses to see the film. The first projections, from 1896 onwards, attracted large audiences. Lumière had a group of operators who travelled around the world with the cinematograph, and showed the pictures in theatres. After a few years, around 1900, films became a part of the program in...

  • Operating theatres are frightening places, a foreign environment where highly specialized techniques that involve opening and invading a human body take place. As such, they present unique challenges for both those who use them, and those who work there. For children who require surgery and their families, the surgical environment is potentially one in which consideration must be given to the whole psychosocial aspect of care, even more so than in any other hospital environment.

  • Since the primitive beginnings of operative surgery, surgeons have had a need to work with assistance, even if it was, in those early times, merely for the purposes of physical restraint. As surgical and anaesthetic practice became more sophisticated, so were the tasks becoming more complex and the demand on the surgical team ever increasing.

  • Central venous pressure is defined as the pressure of blood in the central venous system which is essentially just prior to entry into the right atrium. This is the point where the superior vena cava meets the inferior vena cava prior to entry into the right atrium of the heart. It is usually measured by placing a catheter in one of the veins and then threading it to this point. This procedure is usually done under aseptic techniques in a ward, operating theatre, or the intensive care unit of a well equipped and staffed hospital. A qualified medical practitioner...

  • Léon Dorn is one of the most famous medical illustrators in the world. Even today, at 80 years of age, he continues to pursue his work with the same enthusiasm. His work coincides with his great passion: the representation of the human body. Anatomy holds no secrets for him. He has spent countless hours in operating theatres, dissecting rooms and with himself; when Léon Dorn is drawing hands, he is drawing his own hands ...
