OSL dating

Different optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) single aliquot regenerative (SAR) saturation characteristics have been previously reported for quartz of diverse grain sizes. This preliminary electron spin resonance (ESR) study documents on paramagnetic signals in natural sedimentary quartz extracts of different grain sizes (4–11 μm, 63–90 μm, 90–125 μm, 125–180 μm, 180–250 μm) extracted from loess and sand samples that are amendable to OSL and ESR dating.

There is evidence that optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of quartz using the single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol underestimates the equivalent dose (De) for paleodoses above 100–200 Gy. Additionally, ‘infinitely’ old samples found not to be in laboratory saturation were reported.

A recent inter-comparison (Murray et al., 2015) has helped to highlight variability in the measurement of dose rate between luminescence laboratories. Part of this variability probably reflects the difficulties of homogenising and dissolving samples so that the < 500 mg used in e.g. ICP-MS and NAA is representative.

Determining the most appropriate luminescence protocol, coupled with suitable data processing methods, for dating recently deposited sediments (< 200 years) is important for identifying episodes of sediment movement and interpreting historical landscape dynamics.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signals from individual quartz grains are frequently used for equivalent dose and age determination in luminescence dating. Typically, signals from individual grains are stimulated with a focussed solid-state laser and detected via a photomultiplier tube. In contrast to the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) usually used when stimulating multiple-grain aliquots, the laser has a much higher stimulation power density.

Spatially resolved optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) offers a means for rapid assessment of dose distributions in retrospective dosimetry and geochronology. Until recently, OSL imaging systems have largely been restricted to measurements of millimetre scale samples; this approach is not well suited for applications where the physical process of interest operates on centimetre scale (e.g., depth dependent trap eviction in exposed rocks, sediment mixing in soils, attenuation of gamma radiation, etc.).

Beta Dose Rate heterogeneity is a recognized source of uncertainty when applying luminescence dating to heterogeneous samples, such as coarse crystalline rocks and clast-rich sediments. Simulations have shown that a combination of a heterogeneous distribution of minerals and radioactive elements can lead to complex dose distributions, overdispersion and potentially to bias in equivalent dose determinations.

The new InfraRed PhotoLuminescence (IRPL) signal in feldspar offers a promising alternative to the wellestablished OSL method to recover the absorbed radiation dose for dating purposes. The non-destructive readout using Stokes shifted photoluminescence offers the opportunity to carry out repeat measurements to improve the signal to noise ratio, and the steady state signal enables straightforward spatially and spectrally resolved measurements.

The applicability of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating on quartz from South Island, New Zealand is hampered by the poor behaviour of the targeted signals. However, most OSL dating studies have been focused on using coarse quartz fractions.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) depth profiling utilizes an OSL-at-depth signal to extrapolate an exposure age from rock surfaces. Exposure ages are commonly obtained by fitting the forms of luminescence depth profiles, which depend on parameter estimates of light attenuation and defined rates of luminescence bleaching.

The timing of the deposition of the well-preserved Quaternary marine terraces in the coastal region of northeastern Turkey are crucial in understanding the Quaternary tectonics of the Pontides. The chronology of raised marine terraces between Trabzon and Rize has remained unrevealed because of chronologic limitations. This study aims to establish chronology for the terrace deposits by applying optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating methods using single aliquot regenerative dose (SAR) techniques on quartz grains extracted from marine terraces.

According to existing literature, the western segment of the Manisa Fault Zone is well known characterized; however, the eastern segment of it has rarely been addressed. To decipher the Holocene seismotectonic behavior of the eastern segment of Manisa Fault Zone, trench-based paleoseismological analyses for the first time were performed along with it.

The epidemiology and cause of ossification of the spinal ligaments (OSL) remains obscure. To date, there is no study that comprehensively evaluates the prevalence, distribution, and concomitance of each type of OSL by CT among general Chinese population. We therefore aimed to comprehensively investigate epidemiological characteristics of OSL using whole spine CT in the Chinese population and examine the factors that correlate with the presence of OSL.
