Osteonecrosis of the femoral head

Human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients are 100 times more likely to develop aseptic osteonecrosis compared with the general population. While 90% of cases concern the femoral head, the involvement of humeral bone remains rare.

Femoral neck stress fractures are rare and often recognized as overuse injuries that occur in young athletes or military personnel. A case following osteonecrosis of the femoral head is quite rare; even more uncommon is its occurrence in the bilateral hips. Magnetic resonance imaging has been established as the preferred tool for diagnosing nondisplaced femoral neck stress fracture due to overuse injury.

Various Joint-preserving therapy (JPT) methods have been performed and tried in recent decades, but their results and efficacy were inconsistent and controversial. The purpose of this study is to evaluate its effectiveness and whether there are statistical differences in treatment between different interventions based on published RCT studies.

Femoral head osteonecrosis is frequently observed in patients treated with excessive corticosteroids. The objective of the current study was to establish a rat model to investigate the disruption of immune response in steroid-induced femoral head osteonecrosis via Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway.

Telemore length (TL) shortening has been found in many diseases. However, clinical characteristics of TL shortening in osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) has not been investigated. Therefore, we studied whether TL changes have clinicopathological values in ONFH.

Steroid associated osteonecrosis is difficult to treat. Teriparatide, as the only one bone anabolic drug, has achieved very promising effect in osteoporosis and other bone skeletal diseases. We carried out this animal study to evaluate the effect of subcutaneous injection of teriparatide for the steroid induced femoral head necrosis in a rat model.

Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease (LCPD) is an idiopathic osteonecrosis of the developing femoral head complicated by pain and disability of the hip joint. To date, the pathological mechanisms of LCPD are not well-known. This study screened the changes in serum protein expression in patients with LCPD.

Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is relatively rare and can metastasize to both the lungs and bones. The great majority of bone metastases occur in red marrow regions where blood flow is high. Only one patient has been described with direct DTC metastasis to the subchondral bone of the femoral head.

Multiple small drilling for core decompression is widely used to preserve the femoral head in patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH). Nevertheless, the clinical outcome remains controversial. Simvastatin has been demonstrated to promote bone formation and reduce bone adsorption.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) with failure of tantalum rod implant for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) will be the only choice for patients. However,it remains unknown whether tantalum rod implantation has an adverse effect on the survival time of implants following conversion to THA.

Treatment for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) in young individuals remains controversial. We developed a lantern-shaped screw, which was designed to provide mechanical support for the femoral head to prevent its collapse, for the treatment of ONFH.

Collapse of the femoral head associated with nontraumatic osteonecrosis (NOFH) is one of the most common causes of disability in young adult patients. Excessive bone resorption by osteoclast coincident with the suppression of osteogenesis are believed to be responsible for collapse progression.

A meta-analysis concluded that there was no effect of the femoral head ossification and the incidence of osteonecrosis in the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), unless only osteonecrosis grades II-IV were considered.

The optimal surgical option for patients requiring bilateral hip replacement remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare surgical accuracy; functional outcome and health-related quality of life; and prosthetic-related complications and revision surgery of a simultaneous bilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) with those of a staged bilateral THA with an interval between procedures

Modifications to advanced Core decompression for treatment of Avascular necrosis of the femoral head
“Advanced Core Decompression” (ACD) is a new technique for treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) that includes removal of the necrotic tissue using a percutaneous expandable reamer followed by refilling of the drill hole and the defect with an injectable, hard-setting, composite calcium sulphate (CaSO4)-calcium phosphate (CaPO4) bone graft substitute.

Steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SONFH) is a chronic and crippling bone disease. This study aims to reveal novel diagnostic biomarkers of SONFH. Methods: The GSE123568 dataset based on peripheral blood samples from 10 healthy individuals and 30 SONFH patients was used for weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) screening.
