Book 3 of effective academic writing, the essay, introduces students at the high intermediate to low advanced level to five-paragraph essays. The first unit provides a thorough review of short essay structure and addresses issues of coherence and unity. Each of the following five units then addresses a particular rhetorical mode and provides user-friendly guidance to mastering the form. The book also offers numerous opportunities for practicing relevant grammar points. All grammar presentations and practice are correlated to grammar sense 3.

Freedom of expression has surfaced in large parts of the world, particularly the newly independent nations and the countries that remained in isolation, along with the spread of democracies in those countries. With the rise of free expression of views often contesting with one another, conflicts of different kinds that were under suppression earlier, also emerged. Conflict in itself is considered neither good nor bad but it is judged by its outcome. Study of conflict, specifically the causes behind it relating to power struggle, economic competition, is important for achieving peace.

As Carlo (2001) comments in a recent review, “research on cross-language transfer has made some progress with regard to the issue of identifying particular skills that appear susceptible to transfer from first- to second-language reading. However, questions remain concerning the specification of the cognitive mechanisms responsible for transfer as well as the developmental parameters that constrain transfer effects.

As can be seen in Table 1, the pre-service teachers had diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. 2 Selection of the pre-service teachers, while not designed to be representative, provided a broad student teacher perspective on issues related to teaching ESL writing. The participants represented a diverse set of backgrounds and experiences. Seven were native English speakers. Five were second language speakers of English, with Korean, French and Portuguese as their first language backgrounds.

Although the formalisms normally used for describing the semantics of natural languages are far from computationally tractable, it is possible to isolate particular semantic phenomena and interpret them within simpler formal systems. Quantified mass noun phrases is one such part. We describe a simple formal system suitable for the interpretation of quantified mass noun phrases.

Development of the case studies was based on literature review and interviews with persons inside and outside EPA. The number of interviewees per case study varied roughly from a half dozen to a dozen. There was an effort to ensure balance in the group of respondents for any particular case study, but because of the relatively small number of respondents and the non-random nature of the selection process, extreme caution should be taken in interpreting the numerical response summaries that are reported.

We argue for the usefulness of an active chart as the basis of a system that searches for the globally most plausible explanation of failure to syntactically parse a given input. We suggest semantics-free, grammarindependent techniques for parsing inputs displaying simple kinds of ill-formedness and discuss the search issues involved.

Although there have been many experimental systems for natural-language access to databases, with some now going into actual use, many problems in this area remain to be solved. The purpose of this panel is to put some of those problems before the conference. The panel's motivation stems partly from the fact that, too often in the past, discussion of natural-language access to databases has focused, at the expense of the underlying issues, on what particular systems can or cannot do. To avoid this, the discussions of the present panel will be organized around issues rather than systems. ...

Based on experience with INTELLECT in the areas of quality assurance and customer support, a number of issues in evaluating a natural language database query system, particularly the INTELLECT system, will be discussed. A, I. Corporation offers licenses for customers t o use the INTELLECT software on their computers, to access their databases. We now have a number of customer installations, plus reports from companies that are marketing INTELLECT under agreements with us, so that we can begin to discuss user reactions as possible criteria for evaluating our system. ...

This paper reports work in progress on a sentence generation model which attempts to emulate certain language output patterns of children between the ages of one and one-half and three years. In particular, the model addresses the issue of why missing or phonetically "null" subjects appear as often as they do in the speech of young Englishspeaking children. It will also be used to examine why other patterns of output appear in the speech of children learning languages such as Italian and Chinese.

In this paper, we address the issue of syntagmatic expressions from a computational lexical semantic perspective. From a representational viewpoint, we argue for a hybrid approach combining linguistic and conceptual paradigms, in order to account for the continuum we find in natural languages from free combining words to frozen expressions. In particular, we focus on the place of lexical and semantic restricted co-occurrences.

The frame-of-reference problem has three main aspects: 1.Perspective issue: We have to distinguish between the perspective of the observer and the perspective of the agent itself. In particular, descriptions of behavior from an observer’s perspective must not be taken as the internal mechanisms underlying the described behavior.

I'm sure you're familiar with the Chinese proverb "may you live in interesting times." Even though I rarely think of my professional life as dull and boring, the last month has been particularly exciting. As promised in my exit(0) column from last month's issue, if you look through the middle of the magazine you'll find a full report (in colour!) on the best conference I have ever attended—our very own php|cruise (forgive me for a bit of professional price—eight months of prep work will do that to you).

Welcome to the February 2004 issue of php|architect. As I write this, I'm sitting in my office—about forty degrees Celsius warmer than outside and, therefore, a much better place to work in that that the local park—suffering from an awful cold and sitting by a collection of (clean) tissues discreetly stashed on my desk, ready for use.
