Pesticide removal

The presence of various types of contaminants such as heavy metals, emerging organic contaminants, pesticides, organic waste, organic dyes, radionuclide’s, fluorides, etc. cause water pollution. These pollutants are of concern to engineers, environmentalists and scientists. Due to the lack of freshwater, it is very important to recycle the wastewater after treatment to remove organic contaminates and heavy metal pollutants.

The results indicated that the vegetation set achieved 90% of Imidacloprid removal efficiency while the control set (only soil media) removed Imidacloprid at a range between 64.9 to 65.9%. Furthermore, the vegetation set with additives also resulted in the increment of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) with about 16% and pH increment between 2 to 11% for all treatment train sets with a better water quality improvement.

This study aimed to investigate the removal mechanisms of eight pesticides by the nitrifying expanded-bed filter using biological activated carbon media at the pretreatment of a drinking water plant.

The optimum catalyst concentration recommended for complete degradation was found as 100 mg/L under sunlight. Diclosulam residues in water were determined by HPLC- UV detector and the rate constant and DT50 values were calculated from the obtained data. Based on the results we observed that Cu-Zn NPs acted as excellent photocatalyst for the decontaminating of the diclosulam pesticide residues in water samples.

In this study, a novel metal-organic framework (M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67) was successfully prepared using the single layer Fe3O4-ZIF-8 as magnetic core and wrapped a layer of ZIF-67 outer. This M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 was employed as an adsorbent for the adsorption and removal of fipronil and its metabolites from environmental water and cucumber samples. The characterization results suggested that M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 has the double layer structure a polyhedral structure with uniform pores, while ZIF-67 was successfully coated on the surface of Fe3O4-ZIF-8.

In the present investigation, bacterial species such as E. coli, S. aureus and S. bongori were isolated from soil by using serial dilution. Bioremediation results showed the S. aureus was highly efficient on Diazinon removal by 62%, 63.2% and 68.6%, Pirimicarb removal was 44%, 52.4% and 53.8%, and Atrazine removal was 61%, 65.6% and 70.6%. and the efficiency of E. coli removal on Diazinon was 59%, 60.8% and 63.8%; on Pirimicarb was 44%, 52.4% and 53.8%; and for Atrazine 57%, 60.8% and 64.4%. S. bongori efficiency on Diazinon was 49%, 51.2% and 55.8%; on Pirimicarb removal was 61%, 63.

Rhizoremediation is an in-situ remediation approach involving microorganisms for the biodegradation of organic pollutants and various other contaminants in the root zone. Plant roots provide a rich niche for the microorganisms to grow at the expense of the root exudates and in turn microbes act as biocatalysts to remove the pollutants. The harmful pollutants such as: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)- pesticides, herbicides etc. are converted to degradable compounds, while heavy metals such as zinc, copper, lead, tin, cadmium etc.

Pesticide exposure to residues on surfaces, eggs and birds are minimal, representing little risk to workers. Once treated, birds are seldom handled by workers until removed from the houses at the end of a production cycle. Frequency of application also plays a role in reducing secondary exposure following premise treatments. Poultry houses are often treated just prior to the introduction of a new flock. In the case of broilers and young turkeys, premise treatments will occur at a minimum of every 7 to 8 weeks.
