In thepresence of Tween 80,1-(3¢,4¢-diethoxyphenyl)-1-hydroxy-2-(4¢-methoxyphenyl)propane (I) was oxidized to 3,4-diethoxy-benzaldehyde (II),4-methoxyacetophenone (III) and 1-(3¢,4¢-diethoxyphenyl)-1-oxo-2-(4¢-methoxyphenyl)pro-pane (IV),while only 3,4-diethoxybenzaldehyde (II) and 4-methoxyacetophenone (III) were detected when the reac-tion was conducted in the absence of Tween 80..

Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) is an extracellular flavocytochrome con-taining flavin and b-type heme, and plays a key role in cellulose degrada-tion by filamentous fungi. To investigate intermolecular electron transfer from CDH to cytochrome c, Phe166, which is located in the cytochrome domain and approaches one of propionates of heme, was mutated to Tyr, and the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the mutant (F166Y) were compared with those of the wild-type (WT) enzyme.

The cellobiohydrolase Pc_Cel7D is the major cellulase produced by the white-rot fungusPhanerochaete chrysosporium, constituting 10% of the total secreted protein in liquid culture on cellulose. The enzyme is classified into family 7 of the glycoside hydrolases and, like other family members, catalyses cellulose hydrolysis with net retention of the anomeric carbon configuration.

The 1,3(4)-b-d-glucanases of glycoside hydrolase family 16 provide useful examples of versatile yet specific protein–carbohydrate interactions. In the present study, we report the X-ray structures of the 1,3(4)-b-d-glucanase Phanerochaete chrysosporiumLaminarinase 16A in complex withb-glucan products from laminarin (1.6 A˚ ) and lichenin (1.1 A ˚ ) hydrolysis. The G6G3G3G glucan, in complex with the enzyme, showed ab-1,6 branch in the acceptor site.
