The malignant behaviors of lung cancers are affected by not only cancer cells but also many kinds of stromal cells in tumor microenvironment (TME), including macrophages. Macrophages have been proven to extensively influence tumor progression through several mechanisms, among which switching of macrophages from proinflammatory phenotypes (M1-like) to anti-inflammatory phenotypes (M2-like) mediated by transcription factors such as nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) is the most crucial event. The regulation of NF-κB has been well studied, however some details remain fuzzy.

Haploid yeast cells undergo a reversible phenotypic switch associated with chromosome II copy number
SUP35 and SUP45 are essential genes encoding polypeptide chain release factors. However, mutants for these genes may be viable but display pleiotropic phenotypes which include, but are not limited to, nonsense suppressor phenotype due to translation termination defect.

Cutaneous adverse drug reactions (CADR) associated with oncology therapy involve 45–100% of patients receiving kinase inhibitors. Such adverse reactions may include skin inflammation, infection, pruritus and dryness, symptoms that can significantly affect the patient’s quality of life.

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signalling has emerged as a fundamental pathway in endothelial cell biology and deregulation of this pathway is implicated in several vascular disorders. BMP signalling output in endothelial cells is highly context- and dose-dependent.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are secreted from many cells, carrying cargoes including proteins and nucleic acids. Research has shown that EVs play a role in a variety of biological processes including immunity, bone formation and recently they have been implicated in promotion of a metastatic phenotype.

Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes in gene expression and other genomic functions without altering the underlying DNA sequence. It is associated with gene expression and the expression of different phenotypes mainly by a level of genetic regulation which is independent of the DNA sequence and transmitted somatically or inherited through modification of DNA regions and allows organisms on a multigenerational scale to switch between phenotypes.

Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is a rare, multi-systemic, genetic disorder. Mutations in the ATM gene cause dysfunction in cell-cycle, apoptosis and V (D) J recombination leading to neurodegeneration, cellular, humoral immunodeficiencies and predisposition to malignancies.

Candida albicansis an opportunistic human pathogen with remark-able phenotypic plasticity. Its diploid cells can undergo an epi-genetic phase-transition termed the white-opaque switching. Whereas white cells have a round shape and are unable to mate, opaque cells have an oval shape and are mating-competent.
