Pathogen perception by plants is mediated by plasma membrane-localized immune receptors that have varied extracellular domains. Lectin receptor kinases (LecRKs) are among these receptors and are subdivided into 3 classes, C-type LecRKs (C-LecRKs), L-type LecRKs (L-LecRKs) and G-type LecRKs (G-LecRKs). While C-LecRKs are represented by one or two members in all plant species investigated and have unknown functions, L-LecRKs have been characterized in a few plant species and have been shown to play roles in plant defense against pathogens.

The protein-modifying agent arsenite stimulates glucose uptake in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In the current study we have analysed the signalling pathways that contribute to this response. By subcellular fractionation we observed that arsenite, like insulin, induces translocation of the GLUT1 and GLUT4 glucose transporters from the low-density membrane fraction to the plasma membrane. Previously, we isolated a 4-kDa peptide capable of binding to a 43-kDa receptor-like protein and stimulating protein kinase activity of the 43-kDa protein in soybean. Both of them were found to localize in the plasma membranes and cell walls. Here, we report the physiological effects of 4-kDa peptide expressed transiently in the cultured carrot and bird’s-foot trefoil cells transfected with pBI 121 plas-mid containing the 4-kDa peptide gene.

A new baculovirus-based fluorescence resonance energy transfer (Bv-FRET) assay for measuringmultimerization of cell surface molecules in living cells is described. It has been demonstrated that gonadotropin-releasing hormone recep-tor (GnRH-R) was capable of forming oligomeric com-plexes in the plasma membrane under normal physiological conditions. The mouse gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor GnRH-R was used to evaluate the efficiency and potential applications of this assay.

The functional expression of olfactory receptors (ORs) is a primary require-ment to examine the molecular mechanisms of odorant perception and cod-ing. Functional expression of the rat I7 OR and its trafficking to the plasma membrane was achieved under optimized experimental conditions in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The membrane expression of the receptor was shown by Western blotting and immunolocalization meth-ods.
