Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract. Acquired functional mutations in the tyrosine-protein kinase growth factor receptor proto-oncogene (KIT) and platelet-derived growth factor-alpha gene lead to increased tyrosine kinase activity, which is considered a key factor in the pathogenesis of GIST.

Ebook "Regulation of gene expression in the tumor environment (Regulation of melanoma progression by the microenvironment: The roles of PAR-1 and PAF)" will discuss several different aspects on the cross talk within the tumor microenvironment components leading to the acquisition of the metastasis phenotype. It is our hope that these state-of-the-art studies will shed further light on our understanding of these complicated processes.

Platelet distribution width (PDW), but not platelet count, was found to more comprehensively reflect platelet activity. The present study, thus, aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of PDW to lymphocyte ratio (PDWLR) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following hepatectomy.

Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a marker of platelet activation, which is usually negatively correlated with platelet count (PC). The ratio of MPV to PC (MPV/PC) has an essential role in the diagnosis of multiple malignancies.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease with diverse clinical manifestations and relapsing - remitting disease course. Nephritis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with lupus. Many clinical parameters and laboratory markers can be used to evaluate disease activity and nephritis.

Recently, increasing evidence has indicated that platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase 1b catalytic subunit 3 (PAFAH1B3) plays an important role in several cancers. However, its role in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) has not been reported until now.

In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), pulmonary metastasis (PM) after hepatectomy is associated with poor clinical outcomes. The crucial phases of tumour cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and metastasis all entail platelet activation.

The mean platelet volume (MPV) is an important indicator of platelet function with large platelets showing higher enzymatic and metabolic activity than other platelets. There can be a relationship between increased platelet activity and anxiety and depression. Our primary hypothesis was that patients with high anxiety scores would have higher MPV, and the secondary hypothesis was that propofol induction time and total propofol consumption within the first 30 min of surgery would be higher in patients with higher anxiety scores.

Aging is a multifactorial process that affects multiple tissues and is characterized by changes in homeostasis over time, leading to increased morbidity. Whole blood gene expression signatures have been associated with aging and have been used to gain information on its biological mechanisms, which are still not fully understood.

Improvements in knee osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) have been attributed to its ability to modify intra-articular inflammatory processes. Photo-activation of peripheral blood also improves inflammatory mediators associated with OA, however combined photo-activated PRP (PA-PRP) has not been investigated.

The tumour microenvironment conferred by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) plays a key role in tumour development and progression. We previously determined that platelet-activating factor receptor (PAFR) was overexpressed in ovarian cancer cells (OCCs) and that PAF can promote ovarian cancer progression via PAF/PAFRmediated inflammatory signalling pathways.
