The soil borne, obligate biotrophic fungus Synchytrium endobioticum causes tumor-like tissue proliferation (wart) in potato tubers and thereby considerable crop damage. Chemical control is not effective and unfriendly to the environment. S. endobioticum is therefore a quarantined pathogen. The emergence of new pathotypes of the fungus aggravate this agricultural problem.

Medicago ciliaris (L.) Krock and Medicago intertexta (L.) Mill are most often found in saline regions and are considered as potential resources for genes related to salinity resistance. To explore the genetic diversity of these two species by mean of nrSSR (simplesequence repeats) markers, 11 accessions originated from different regions in north of Africa and Middle East were chosen. Ten among 14 markers turned out to be polymorphic and gave 72 alleles. Eight markers were very informative with PIC values > 0.5, and three of them were found to be nonneutral.

J. excelsa M. Bieb forms about 82% of the total juniper forests in Turkey. A total of 456 plant samples belonging to 19 J. excelsa populations were collected to determine the genetic variation of J. excelsa and compare their genetic diversity among populations via simple-sequence repeat (SSR) and intron targeted amplified polymorphism (ITAP) markers. Seven SSR and 132 ITAP loci were polymorphic. The percentage of polymorphism for ITAP loci at the population level ranged from 31.34 to 55.97.

Orobanche cumana is a parasitic plant that can lead to advanced losses in yield of agricultural lands cultivating sunflower, depending on the sunflower varieties and the level of contamination. In our study, genetic diversity of six O. cumana populations from the Thrace region of Turkey was determined with the help of eight SSR (microsatellite) loci. All SSR loci were polymorphic. A total of 23 alleles were determined for the analyzed 120 samples. Allele number of each SSR locus ranged from two to six. Mean number of alleles (Na = 2.271), effective allele number (Ne = 1.

Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are tandem repeats of DNA that have been used to develop robust genetic markers. These molecular markers are powerful tools for basic and applied studies such as molecular breeding. In the model plants in Nicotiana genus e.g. N. benthamiana, a comprehensive assessment of SSR content has become possible now because several Nicotiana genomes have been sequenced. We conducted a genomewide SSR characterization and marker development across seven Nicotiana genomes.

Carex L. is one of the largest genera in the Cyperaceae family and an important vascular plant in the ecosystem. However, the genetic background of Carex is complex and the classification is not clear. In order to investigate the gene function annotation of Carex, RNA-sequencing analysis was performed.

In the present study, 15 genotypes of Brassica juncea including white rust resistant and double low quality were characterized and allelic differentiation was determined using 453 SSRs and 139 (30.7%) showed polymorphism with 308 alleles. Polymorphic information content ranged from 0.101 to 0.668, with the average value of 0.474, revealing that much variation was present among these genotypes.

In the present study SSR markers were shown to be polymorphic between parents which would help in establishing the genetic purity of hybrids in commercial seed lots. Also, few SSRs were found to discriminate among the set of hybrids which will ease the seed identity of competing hybrids in seed chain. Low probability of identity based on marker information suggests that a set of markers identified in present study can be efficiently used in establishing distinctness, identity and purity of hybrids in open markets after their release.

Rice recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of Japonica x Indica cross were grown in irrigated conditions for identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for yield associated traits. One hundred twenty one RIL lines were evaluated in the field environment. A total of one hundred twenty two SSR markers were used for polymorphism out of forty markers that showed parental polymorphism. Forty SSR markers were used to construct the genetic linkage map. In total, nine QTLs were identified for yield attributing traits.

Earliness, an adaptive trait and factor of variation for agronomic characters, is a major trait in plant breeding. In present investigation, the experimental material comprised of P1, P2, F1, F2 and F2:3 generations of wheat crossDL-788-2 X GW-322 for earliness related traits with objective of linkage and QTL mapping in bread wheat. An experiment was carried out at AICRP on Potato under Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar to study diversity among morphologically distinguishable potato genotypes with SSR markers. Twenty potato genotypes were laid out in a Randomized Block Design with four replications. Eight morphological characters were observed based on DUS characteristics to visually differentiate genotypes. In addition, fifteen SSR markers were used to depict clear-cut variation among genotypes with the aid of polymorphic bands.
