  • Dermatophytes are a group of closely related keratinophilic fungi that can invade keratinized humans and animals tissues such as skin, hair and nails causing dermatophytosis. They are an important cause of superficial fungal infection. Conventional methods like potassium hydroxide (KOH) direct microscopy and fungal culture lacks the ability to make an early and specific diagnosis, as it takes about four weeks for the culture to grow on Sabourauds dextrose agar.

  • Fungal infections or mycoses are classified as Superficial, Subcutaneous, and Systemic depending on the degree of invasion of the host. Superficial fungal infections are most common in tropical and subtropical countries. Superficial fungal infections of the skin are one of the most common dermatological conditions seen in clinical practice. It affects 20- 25% of the population. In this study, 1473 Suspected superficial fungal infection cases were identified among approximately 3500 patients screened during August 2017 to August 2019.

  • The use of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) as biofertilizers has concurrently increased phosphate uptake in plants and improved crop yield in several crops. A laboratory study was conducted to isolate, identify, and characterize the phosphate solubilizing bacteria from different crop soils. The population of PSB was higher in the rhizosphere soil of maize. Preliminary selections as PSB were done on the basis of formation of transparent zone around the colony on Pikovaskaya’s agar medium. The isolated PSB were identified by their morphological and biochemical properties.

  • In the present study 86 number of skin scrapings were collected from various breeds like Labrador retriever (n=32), German shepherd (n=21), Spitz (n=9), Dacshund (n=16), Mastiff (n=5), Boxer (n=3) and age groups from 6 months to, above 3 year with characteristics ring like lesions, alopecia, irregular patches of hair loss. All the dogs were presented to teaching veterinary clinical complex, Odisha veterinary college from December 2018 to June 2019.On routine identification of fungus out of 86 number of skin scrappings it was revealed that arthospores were present in 54 number of samples.

  • Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the finger or toe nail caused by various fungal agents like dermatophytes, non dermatophytes moulds and yeasts. It is necessary to diagnose the infection with proper laboratory evidences before treating them with antifungal drugs, which require prolonged duration of treatment and may have adverse side effects. This study involves comparison of standard laboratory tests in the diagnosis of onychomycosis, namely, potassium hydroxide mount (KOH mount), Calcofluor white staining and fungal culture of the nail clippings.

  • Bioethanol is one of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the transport sector. Ethanol may be produced either from petroleum products or from biomass. In the world around 80% of the ethanol produced is still obtained from fermentation and the reminder comes largely by synthesis from the petroleum product ethylene (Tanaka, 2006). Cotton stalks have been regarded as potential sources for cellulosic ethanol production owing to their high cellulose content being almost 37% (Binod et al., 2012).

  • In this study, we have used the potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an eco–friendly and favorable activating agent to develop the porous and defect structure of activated carbon. Otherwise, the response surface methodology (RSM) has been applied to investigate the effects of the adsorption parameters including initial concentration, adsorbent dosage, and pH of solution on the percentage of Cu2+ removal.

  • Two derivatives of 2-thioxoquinazolin-4(3H)-one including compounds 3 and 5 were synthesized by cyclization reaction of anthranilic acid with ethyl isothiocyanate and phenyl isothiocyanate, respectively. Eight novel derivatives of 2-thioxoquinazolin-4(3H)-one including compounds (7a-h) were synthesized by cyclization reaction of derivatives of anthranilic acid with aromatic amines and carbon disulfide in potassium hydroxide/methanol. The obtained compounds were structurally determined by IR, MS, 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR analysis method.

  • Two chemical treatments were applied to jute fibers to create a better bonding of fiber to resin in natural composite materials. The jute fibers have been treated with hydroxide potassium (KOH) and a bleaching agent, canxi hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)2.4H2O), in varying periods. Characterization techniques such as FT-IR, SEM were used to evaluate the effect of chemical treatments on fiber structure. After treatment the surface topography of jute was clean and microfibrils were revealed, these lead to an enhancement in mechanical properties and interfacial strength between jute fiber and PP.

  • 136 A. Singh et al. 5.2.4 Soil Microcosms One of the simplest methods requiring minimal equipment for soil biodegradation studies is with use of a biometer flask (Bellco, Vineland, NJ, USA). The United Sates Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OCED) have also recommended this method (OECD 1981; McFarland et al. 1991; Skladany and Baker 1994). Biodegradation activity can be evaluated by directly monitoring the loss of the target compounds or indirectly by measuring by-products of biodegradation or electron acceptor consumption.
