Potato frying color is an agronomic trait influenced by the sugar content of tubers. The candidate gene approach was employed to elucidate the molecular basis of this trait in Solanum tuberosum Group Phureja, which is mainly diploid and represents an important genetic resource for potato breeding.

Tuber appearance is highly variable in the Andean cultivated potato germplasm. The diploid backcross mapping population ‘DMDD’ derived from the recently sequenced genome ‘DM’ represents a sample of the allelic variation for tuber shape and eye depth present in the Andean landraces. Here we evaluate the utility of morphological descriptors for tuber shape for identification of genetic loci responsible for the shape and eye depth variation.

The soil borne, obligate biotrophic fungus Synchytrium endobioticum causes tumor-like tissue proliferation (wart) in potato tubers and thereby considerable crop damage. Chemical control is not effective and unfriendly to the environment. S. endobioticum is therefore a quarantined pathogen. The emergence of new pathotypes of the fungus aggravate this agricultural problem.

Plectranthus edulis (Vatke) Agnew (locally known as Ethiopian dinich or Ethiopian potato) is one of the most economically important edible tuber crops indigenous to Ethiopia. Evaluating the extent of genetic diversity within and among populations is one of the first and most important steps in breeding and conservation measures.

Wireworms are polyphagous soil-dwelling pests that are hard to control. Attract-and-kill strategies, combining attractive semiochemicals with biocontrol agents, have great promise to control insect pests. We hypothesized that the combination of plant semiochemicals and entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in an attract-and-kill system could greatly enhance the nematodes’ efficiency against wireworms. We evaluated the potential of alginate beads loaded with plant extracts and EPNs to control Agriotes obscurus.

Hundred percent of microtuber below 250 mg induced in 3% sucrose concentration and from then the microtuber grade induction decreased with the increase of sucrose concentration. >500 mg grade microtuber produced by Granola (47.95%) with 10% sucrose while Diamant produced 50.15% above 500 mg grade microtuber with 14% sucrose.

This study also showed comparatively higher solubility percentage in ‘BARI TPS-1’ tuber than the other local varieties, suggesting rapid disruption of swollen starch granule and faster starch degradation in TPS than the other local potato starches. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of starch granule showed rapidly ruptured and clumped starch granules in ‘BARI-TPS-1’ than the others, indicating TPS starch might obtain gelatinization temperature within a shorter period of microwave heating than that of the other varieties.

Potato dry rot disease (Fusarium spp.) is one of the most important fungal storage rots on potato tubers after harvesting. The aims of this study were to identify the Fusarium species that cause dry rot in potato storages, evaluate the most virulent Fusarium species in vitro and in vivo for fungicide sensitivity and determine the susceptibility of the cultivars. In this context, as a result of surveys carried out in potato storages of Ödemiş and Torbalı counties in İzmir province in 2015–2016; Fusarium species obtained from diseased potato tubers were identified as Fusarium sambucinum, F.

Storage tubers and root crops are important sustenance food crops grown throughout the world. Despite the availability of genome sequence for sweet potato, cassava, carrot and sugar beet, the molecular mechanism of root-derived storage organ development remains completely unexplored. Considering the pivotal role of PTBs and their target RNAs in potato storage organ development, we propose that a similar mechanism may be prevalent in storage root crops as well.

Plant non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) are small, basic proteins that are abundant in higher plants. They have been reported to play an important role in various plant physiological processes, such as lipid transfer, signal transduction, and pathogen defense.

Anthocyanins, which have important biological functions and have a beneficial effect on human health, notably account for pigmentation in purple-fleshed sweet potato tuberous roots. Individual regulatory factors of anthocyanin biosynthesis have been identified; however, the regulatory network of anthocyanin biosynthesis in purple-fleshed sweet potato is unclear.

Common scab caused by Streptomyces scabies (Thaxter) Waksman & Henrici is an important disease worldwide, and can cause significant reduction in the economic value of potato. The management of the disease can be done through conventional methods, biological chemical and cultivation of resistant variety. However, resistance against pathogen is not a permanent solution and fungicidal is not ecofriendly and economical. But new search, induce resistance has taken great attention for plant disease management in near future.

The use of plant tissue culture as a routine method of potato seed production would be costly but these techniques can be used to eliminate the pathogens, produce required initial material and then, use another efficient and cheaper system to rapidly produce high quality seed tubers for commercial production. Considering this, the liquid formulation of antimycotic 100x, and amphotericin-B 250 µg/ml of PAA make was used.

Black scurf disease on potato is causing an economically losses to the potato crops which causes both quantitative and qualitative damage occurs in potato production areas all over the world. The fungus limits the growth by forming cankers on sprouts, underground stems, and stolons, and makes tubers ugly by forming black scurf (sclerotia) on tuber surfaces.
