Potential oncogene

Next-generation sequencing has enabled patient selection for targeted drugs, some of which have shown remarkable efficacy in cancers that have the cognate molecular signatures. Intriguingly, rapidly emerging data indicate that altered genes representing oncogenic drivers can also be found in sporadic non-malignant conditions, some of which have negligible and/or low potential for transformation to cancer.

All cell types express long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), which have the potential to play a role in carcinogenesis by altering the levels of their expression. Squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus (ESCC) is a deadly disease with a poor prognosis and a high frequency of lymphatic metastases.

Oncogenic Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs) base their transforming potential on the action of both E6 and E7 viral oncoproteins, which perform cooperative or antagonistic actions and thus interfere with a variety of relevant cellular targets.

Tumor necrosis factor alpha-induced protein 2 (TNFAIP2), a TNFα-inducible gene, appears to participate in inflammation, immune response, hematopoiesis, and carcinogenesis. However, the potential role of TNFAIP2 in the development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains unknow yet. Therefore, we aimed to study the biological role of TNFAIP2 in leukemogenesis.

Upregulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade is common in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Neuroblastoma RAS viral oncogene homolog (NRAS) is mutated in a small percentage of HCC and is hitherto considered insufficient for hepatocarcinogenesis.

Leucine-rich pentatricopeptide repeat containing (LRPPRC) is a potential oncogene in multiple tumor types, including lung adenocarcinoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and gastric cancer. LRPPRC exerts its tumor-promoting effects mainly by regulating mitochondrial homeostasis and inducing oxidative stress.

The oncogenic drivers of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), which is characterized by worst prognosis compared with other subtypes, are poorly understood. Although next-generation sequencing technology has facilitated identifying potential targets, few of the findings have been translated into daily clinical practice.

Accumulating evidence suggests that LINC00511 acts as an oncogenic long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) in various cancers, including lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Hence, we attempted to elucidate the potential role of LINC00511 in LUAD.

Recently the role of microRNAs has been explored immensely as novel regulators and potential biomarkers in several cancers. MiR-509-3p is one such miRNA that has been observed to show a mixed expression in different cancers, while it’s expression and clinical relevance in colorectal cancer (CRC) has not yet been characterized.

Adenocarcinoma of the pancreas is one of the most aggressive cancer diseases affecting the human body. The oncogenic potential of this type of cancer is mainly characterized by its extreme growth rate triggered by the activation of signaling cascades. Modern oncological treatment strategies aim at efficiently modulating specific signaling and transcriptional pathways.

Activated Cdc42-associated kinase 1 (ACK1), a kind of tyrosine kinase, is considered to be an oncogene in many cancers, and it is likely to become a potential target for cancer treatment. We found that the expression of the ACK1 gene in colon cancer was higher than that in normal tissues adjacent to cancer, and high expression of the ACK1 gene was associated with poor prognosis of patients.

Epidemiological evidence suggests that synchronous or metachronous presentation of breast and thyroid cancers exceeds that predicted by chance alone. The following potential explanations have been hypothesized: common environmental or hormonal factors, oncogenic effect of the treatment for the first cancer, closer follow-up of cancer survivors, shared underlying genetic risk factors.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is one of the most important mechanisms supporting MDR development. ER stress-mediated chemotherapeutic resistance is very common in aggressive tumors. The in vitro and in vivo experiments on breast tumors indicate that ER stress-activated protein kinase R (PKR)-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK)- activating transcription factor (ATF4) signal axis plays an important role in the survival of tumors and metastasis. Besides, ER stress-associated oncogenic microRNAs (miRNAs) induce chemoresistance in breast tumors.

Genetic testing identifies the potential risk of multiple endocrine neoplasia in a Vietnamese family
In this study, we reported a rare case of a 44-year-old man from Vietnam with medullary thyroid carcinoma and pheochromocytoma as the symptom of MEN2A. Genetic testing indicated a nucleotide substitution located in exon 11 of the RET proto-oncogene (c.1900T>C, p.C634R), which was reported as a known pathogenic mutation of MEN2A. Further genetic tests on the other family members found the same mutation in his daughter (currently 14 years-old) and his son (currently 8 years-old). A

Glycolysis is a central metabolic pathway for tumor cells. However, the potential roles of glycolysisrelated genes in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) have not been investigated. The glycolysis-related risk signature is closely associated with RCC prognosis, progression and immune microenvironment. CD44, PLOD1 and PLOD2 may serve as RCC oncogenes.

Previous cancer genomics studies focused on searching for novel oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes whose abundance is positively or negatively correlated with end-point observation, such as survival or tumor grade. This approach may potentially miss some truly functional genes if both its low and high modes have associations with end-point observation.
