Preparation of polymer composites

In this study, we synthesized hydroxyapatite (HA) on polyvinyl alcohol/TiO2 (PVA/TiO2) in which TiO2 was prepared by the sol-gel method. HA was formed by immersing the membrane in the simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. We improved the mechanical strength of the membranes by adding glutaraldehyde (GA) combining with heat treatment to cross-link the polymer network.

In the present study, we have made an attempt to prepare complexed PVA-PVP-KNO3-BaTiO3 blend composite polymer electrolyte membranes composed of potassium nitrate (KNO3) as salt and BaTiO3 of various concentrations as filler and studied their properties. The advantages of addition the fillers are the increase in ionic conductivity at room temperatures and the improvement of the stability at the interface with electrodes.

The exploitation of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite-polymer composites is a promising strategy for the preparation of photoactive thin layers for solar cells. In the present investigation, GNS have been prepared by an aqueous anodic exfoliation of pencil graphite in an acidic medium at different dc voltages (5 Ve12 V). The GNS prepared at optimum voltage were mixed with polyaniline (PANI) polymer and drop casted on an indium tin oxide (ITO)/Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate to study the I-V characteristics and to measure the band gap of composites.

P2ClAn/PVDF composite membranes were prepared utilizing cation-exchange groups in the PVDF (polyvinylidenefluoride) membrane matrix by casting method. The poly(2-chloroaniline) (P2ClAn) was chemically synthesized with different dopant anions such as o-aminobenzene sulfonic acid (ABS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). P2ClAn/PVDF membranes were extensively characterized for their surface morphology, thickness, ion-exchange capacity, SEM, AFM, and FTIR-ATR measurements.

The prepared materials were characterized by using BET, TGA, XRD, and TEM techniques. Cyclic voltammetry was used in order to determine the electrocatalytic activity of the prepared catalyst for hydrogen oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions that occur in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The Pt loading obtained over the composite material was around 10%. TEM results showed highly dispersed and small nanoparticles over the composite material by using scCO2 deposition.

The fiber composite was found to have excellent biocompatibility with significant cell growth, while the MTX-loaded PVA/HAP/FA composite showed cytotoxicity against A459 cells. The prepared fibrous composites will serve as a superior biomaterial for osteosarcoma-diseased bone repair after evidencing of in-vivo and clinical trials.

The degree of DNA depolymerization, qualitative and quantitative composition of protein and lipid components of the obtained preparations determined the possibility of their use as medical drugs. The method of obtaining the target product with the use of salt extraction and ethanol precipitation was supplemented by proteolysis in order to remove residual protein to a value of no more than 5% of dry weight.

A superhydrophobic high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/organoclay composite material with a water-static contact angle of ∼162◦ and low hysteresis (7◦) was prepared by a simple solution-intercalation technique. This onestep method consists of the insertion of organoclay, produced through cation exchange with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), in the polymer matrix at 120◦C in xylene. In this process, evaporation of the solvent and organoclay amount are key factors for the achievement of superhydrophobicity.

In the present work, a green emitting composite with attractive photoluminescent properties was obtained through the embedding of the Tb3+ complex with N-hydroxyphthalimide in a poly-(N-vinyl-pyrrolidone) matrix, which was further processed in thin or thick films. First, several complexes of Gd3+, Tb3+, and Y3+ with N-hydroxyphthalimide with the general formula [M(NHF)3(DMF)2] were prepared at a 1:3 metal/ligand ratio. The Tb3+ complex presents specific emission peaks, with the most intense peak located at 543 nm, thus being selected for incorporation in the poly(N-vinyl-pyrrolidone) matrix.

Recently, membrane-based separation processes, particularly electrodialysis, have attracted attention for the separation and purification of organic and amino acids from animal feedstock waste. In this study, cation exchange membranes were synthesized by making a composite of thermoplastic polyurethane and polyaniline (PANI) via the doping of various aromatic sulfonic acids, such as β-naphthol sulfonic acid and phenol sulfonic acid. The PANI was prepared using a standard method, which was further used in the composite blending at varying concentrations of 10%–20%.

This nonessential metal is a threat to the patients of chronic renal disorders, as it is easily retained in their plasma and quickly accumulates in different tissues. Due to environmental concerns, increasing attention has been focused on the application and preparation of biobased polymers and their blends. In this study, cellulose, the most spread biopolymer on Earth, was used in the preparation of novel cotton/polypropyleneAu and cotton/polyethylene-Au nanocomposites via a green mechanochemical approach. First, mechanoradicals were generated by ball milling of the cotton and thermoplastics under cryo conditions, and then, these radicals were used in the reduction of Au ions to Au nanoparticles (Au NPs).

We report the effect of graphene oxide (GO) on film formation and morphological properties of GO-doped polystyrene (PS) latex nanocomposite (PS latex/GO) films using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PS latex particles were synthesized through emulsion polymerization technique and then nanocomposite blends, each containing different concentrations of GO ranging from 0 wt% to 70 wt%, were obtained.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are polymers, which are produced by microorganisms in the form of granules under unbalanced growth conditions. They are biocompatible, biodegradable and sustainable, which makes it suitable for synthesising biomedical apparatus. Devices such as sutures, orthopaedic devices, cardiovascular implants, implant patches can be prepared using different combinations of this polymer. The polymer and its composites being biodegradable and sustainable can take over the conventional plastics in near future.
