  • preconstructed dictionaries or thesauruses. Even in this relatively simplified environment one does not normally undertake a linguistic analysis of any scope. In fact, syntactic and semantic analysis have been used in b i b l i o g r a p h i c information retrieval only under special circumstances to analyze query phrases [22], to process structured text samples of a certain kind, [7,15], or finally to process texts in severely restricted topic areas. [2] Where s p e c i a l conditions do n o t o b t a i n , the preferred approach in...

  • One of the important observations done during the CLEF 2009 campaign (Ferro and Peters, 2009) related to CLIR was that the usage of Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) systems (eg. Google Translate) for query translation led to important improvements in the cross-lingual retrieval performance (the best CLIR performance increased from ˜55% of the monolingual baseline in 2008 to more than 90% in 2009 for French and German target languages). However, generalpurpose SMT systems are not necessarily adapted for query translation.

  • The problem we address in this paper is that of providing contextual examples of translation equivalents for words from the general lexicon using comparable corpora and semantic annotation that is uniform for the source and target languages. For a sentence, phrase or a query expression in the source language the tool detects the semantic type of the situation in question and gives examples of similar contexts from the target language corpus.

  • The Head-driven Phrase Structure G r a m m a r project ( H P S G ) is an English language database query system under development at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. Unlike other product-oriented efforts in the natural language understanding field, the H P S G system was designed and implemented by linguists on the basis of recent theoretical developments. But, unlike other implementations of linguistic theories, this system is not a toy, as it deals with a variety of practical problems not covered in the theoretical literature. ...

  • But I can take this stand strongly only by being very liberal in defining both "natural language interface" and "database systems". Instead of assuming that the problem is one of using typed English to access and/or update a file or files in a single database system, let us define a spectrum of potential natural language interfaces (limiting that phrase, for the moment, to mean typed English sentences) to various kinds of information systems. At one end of this spectrum is simple, single database query, in which the translation from NL to the db system is quite direct. ...
