The Mekong Delta is regarded as the granary of Vietnam, with an annual production of 24.1 million tons (2023). Currently, fresh paddy is transported directly from farmers’ fields to drying facilities or rice mills. Given the extensive river and canal system in the Mekong Delta, the majority of paddy (up to 92%) is transported by barges.

Hybrid technology in many crops has contributed 20-30 per cent increase in the production and exploitation of heterosis through the development of F1 hybrids which has been recently deployed in rice with yield advantage of 20-25 per cent over best pure lines. The main aim of any plant breeding programme is to develop special high yielding hybrids and success of any plant breeding programme depends on the choice of appropriate genotypes as parents in the hybridization programme.

The human population continues to grow steadily with the shrinking resources being used for agricultural production situates great challenge against Indian agricultural system to attain food and environmental security. To counter these twin challenges in the country there is urgent need of application of modern Hi-tech technologies for enhancing the productivity and sustainability of the rice-wheat system for long term on scientific basis. Precision farming (PF) looks a win-win technology towards improving the capability of agricultural land to produce crops on sustainable basis.

Upland rice grows on 19 million ha, about 15% of the world's rice plantation [2]. The production of upland rice is crucial to agricultural economy of many countries [15]. The yield of upland rice is very low with an average of about 1 t/ha. Drought is a major constraint to the productivity of upland rice.

Yellow stem borer has been identified as a major insect pest of deepwater rice, causing severe yield losses. Bt gene(s) from Bacillus thuringiensis have been proven very effective in pest resistance program. The use of transgenic plants expressing Bt gene(s) is now occupied effective approach to control insect infestation. We have successfully introduced a synthetic cryIA(b) gene into embryogenic calli of a deepwater indica rice variety, Vaidehi, by using the biolistic method of transformation.

Biofertilisers are defined in this application as microbial inoculants, isolated from soil or the rhizosphere of plants, assisting the mobilisation of soil nutrients such as N and P and others in the plant rhizosphere and thus promoting the growth rate and yield of plants. Successful biofertilisers can contribute to increases in food production in a highly sustainable manner, with economic and environmental advantages.

The global annual potential bioethanol production from the major crops, corn, barley, oat, rice, wheat, sorghum, and sugar cane, is estimated. To avoid con/icts between human food use and industrial use of crops, only the wasted crop, which is de0ned as crop lost in distribution, is considered as feedstock. Lignocellulosic biomass such as crop residues and sugar cane bagasse are included in feedstock for producing bioethanol as well. There are about 73:9 Tg ofdry wasted crops in the world that could potentially produce 49:1 GL year−1 ofbioethanol.
