Prolapsed uterus

A jersey crossbred primipara cow was reported to have complete uterine prolapse 3 hours after delivery of a large sized male calf. Correction operation was started with Lignocain- Xylazine combined epidural anaesthesia 8ml and 0.3ml, respectively.

The present case is related to post- partum uterine prolapse in a jersey cow which frequently occurs due to a variety of reasons. In this case, the uterine prolapse was observed 2 hrs after delivery showing protrusion of an extensive mass of the uterus with profuse bleeding.

The purpose of the present paper is to describe the efficacy of horizontal mattress sutures in managing post-partum uterine prolapse in Malabari goats. Three cases of post-partum uterine prolapse were presented to Veterinary Hospital, Nedumkandam, Idukki, Keralawith the history of everted uterus hanging from the vagina. All of the cases were presented within 10 hours following the parturition. The prolapsed uterus was washed by using normal saline solution followed by washing with 1:1000 potassium permanganate solution.

A case of traumatic prolapsed uterus in a crossbred cow was handled in field condition with a history of normal calving followed by complete expulsion of the uterus at the time of expulsion of foetal membranes, four hours post delivery. The prolapsed mass was cleaned, tears sutured, lubricated, reduced and repositioned successfully by manual method and retained by Buhner’s suture under epidural anesthesia. There was complete recovery of the animal after 3 days.

Single sampling devices and methods have their limitations in obtaining adequate smears from the cervix. A combination of two devices, usually spatula and endocervical brush, give better results. Triple smear or the vaginal-cervical-endocervical (VCE) technique can provide the best results. However, feasibility and cost factor need to be taken into consideration. In postmenopausal women, the squamo-columnar junction recedes making it difficult to obtain good amount of endocervical cells and cells from TZ.
