Service delivery for NTD control in Kenya and most African countries has primarily been through a vertical approach and has not fully leveraged the contribution of other sectors. GHI in Kenya will provide technical assistance to GOK’s health sector in facilitating the incorporation of NTD prevention and management into maternal and child health platforms, and into the educational system to reach adolescents. GHI will work with the GOK Ministries of Education, Medical Services and Public Health and Sanitation on the implementation of the interventions.

The overall goals for treatment of tuberculosis are 1) to cure the individual patient, and 2) to minimize the transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to other persons. Thus, successful treatment of tuberculosis has benefits both for the individual patient and the community in which the patient resides. For this reason the prescribing physician, be he/she in the public or private sector, is carrying out a public health function with responsibility not only for prescribing an appropriate regimen but also for successful completion of therapy.

Opposition—usually but not always from conservative, religious sectors of society—in many countries has blocked or severely hampered the spread of sexuality education. As Senderowitz (2000) points out, of the range of YRH interventions, school-based programs typically are the most exposed to criticism and opposition. Sexuality education programs usually unfold in the public sector, are highly visible, and are often under the control of local authorities and thus more open to revision or elimination.

This system is financed through a mixture of public and private insurance and out-of-pocket payments by families, especially for mental, developmental, and oral health services that are not well covered by insurance. Many services are pro- vided within the traditional health care sector (doctors’ offices, hospitals, and clinics); however, some services such as mental health services take place outside the health care sector in schools and in child care and community centers, further fragmenting delivery pathways and complicating access.
