  • The basis for genetic enhancement in any crop is systematic assessment of variability and genetic diversity available in the germplasm. The most widely used technique to assess the genetic diversity is Mahalanobis’s D2 statistic. In the present study, this technique has been applied to assess the diversity among 228 sorghum genotypes.

  • Twenty-three genotypes were screened for charcoal rot resistance in the sick plot during rabi 2018-19. The results of the study indicated that the genotypes E 36-1 (12.00) followed by SPH 1903, SPV 2654, SPV 2655, SPV 2656 and CSH 13R (13.00) showed minimum charcoal rot index compared to other genotypes. Highest charcoal rot index was recorded in SPV 2662 (31.00) followed by Phule Anuradha (29.00). Out of twentythree genotypes screened twenty-one genotypes showed moderately resistant reaction and remaining two genotypes showed susceptible disease reaction.

  • Thirteen rabi sorghum genotypes were studied for root traits in rabi 2013-14 at All India Sorghum Improvement Project, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri in Phule Root Box Structure under receding soil moisture. The genotypes were sown on exclusively receding soil moisture under rainout shelter. The results of soil moisture status revealed that the soil moisture gradually decreased from sowing till the harvest of crop. The moisture depletion was less at vegetative phase as compared to reproductive phase. The sharp decrease with increasing depth was observed at reproductive phase.

  • Seventy-eight genotypes were screened for charcoal rot resistance in the sick plot during rabi 2018-19. The results of the study indicated that the genotypes E 36-1 (11.53 %), followed by DSV 4 (12.24 %), Dagadi Solapur (13.40 %) showed less disease incidence compared to other genotypes. Highest per cent charcoal rot incidence was recorded in CSV 8R (54.34 %). The study also revealed that the local genotypes recorded reduced levels of other charcoal rot parameters such as per cent lodging due to charcoal rot (soft stalk), mean length of spread (MLS) and mean number of nodes crossed (MNC).

  • The experiment was conducted under rainfed condition at Agricultural Research Station, Madhira during early rabi 2016 using 40 ICRISAT sorghum genotypes. Estimation of variation, phenotypic and genotypic correlations along with path analysis was calculated for the material under study. High amount of variability was recorded in the material for various traits under study. Plant height showed positive significant association with number of leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width, ear length, straw weight, 100 seed weight and grain yield per plant.

  • Sorghum shoot fly [Atherigona soccata (Rondani)] is one of the most important pests of grain sorghum. It is important to understand the nature of gene action to breed for resistance to the target insect pest. In the present study, a population of 259 sorghum recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from cross 296B (shoot fly susceptible) x IS 18551 (shoot fly resistant) were evaluated in shoot fly screening nursery to study the inheritance of shoot fly resistance. Variances due to RIL genotypes (G), screening environment (E) and G x E interactions were significant for the traits studied.
