This may be better preposition for reclamation of sodic soils. The use of lagoon sludge along with spent wash is also beneficial for reclamation of sodic verticals’ (Anonymous 2014-15). In view of above fact there is need of efficient, inexpensive and environmentally acceptable amendment for reclamation of alkali soils.

The study about70 lakh hectare area of the country is affected with salinity and alkalinity. A large area of Uttar Pradesh (10.6 lakh ha.) is also affected with salinity spread over in 38 districts. UPLDC (Uttar Pradesh Land Development Corporation) initiated a World Bank sponsored programme “Sodic Land Reclamation Project” in some district on pilot basis in the year 1993 which was extended later on to 10 districts. This project envisaged to reclaim 45,000 ha land during 1994-95 to 2000 through participatory management mechanism.

The abiotic stresses, such as soil salinity and sodicity are largely responsible for the low productivity of crops mainly due to low availability of micro-nutrients especially as zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe). Therefore, judicious management of plant nutrients in these soils is as important as their reclamation.

Sodic soils are characterized by adverse physical conditions with high sodium build up. These soils can be put to crop production only when they are reclaimed using calcium bearing chemical amendments. In this regard, attempts were made to study utilization of distillery spent wash to reclaim sodic soil and calcareous sodic soil.

Currently more than 20 per cent of the world’s irrigated land is salt affected. Of that about 60 per cent are sodic soils, warranting attention for efficient, inexpensive and environmentally feasible amelioration. An incubation study was performed to study the influence of amendments on physico-chemical and biological properties of sodic soil. Gypsum + Green manure @ 6.5 t ha-1 , Distillery spentwash (DSW)@ 5 lakhs liter-1 , Green leaf manure (GLM) @ 12.5 t ha-1were used as amendments for the reclamation of sodic soil by adopting standardized reclamation procedure.

A field experiment was conducted for 4 successive years, consisting of eight treatments laid out in randomized block design to evaluate the soil fertility status after harvest of wheat (Triticum aestivum L) in salt affected soils of Gujarat as influenced by iron and zinc enriched FYM.

The application of sufficient amounts of leaching water by means of an effective method is very important in the management and reclamation of saline and sodic soils. Reclamation cannot be achieved with insufficient leaching water application, while excess water application may cause severe problems in soil.
