Response of pearl millet
-
Two field experiments were conducted in the experimental station farm, faculty of agriculture, Ain Shams University at Shalakan, Kalubia Governorate, during the two growing seasons, i.e. 2009 and 2010, to investigate the response of growth and forage yield production of pearl millet cv. Shandaweel 1 to nitrogen fertilization rates and cutting height above the soil surface.

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is a cereal crop that possesses the ability to withstand drought, salinity and high temperature stresses. The NAC [NAM (No Apical Meristem), ATAF1 (Arabidopsis thaliana Activation Factor 1), and CUC2 (Cup-shaped Cotyledon)] transcription factor family is one of the largest transcription factor families in plants. NAC family members are known to regulate plant growth and abiotic stress response.

A study was conducted to process pearl millet and develops ready to eat healthy extruded snacks. For that purpose, designed experiments were conducted to prepare pearl millet-starch based RTE extrudates by using three independent variables (feed composition, moisture content and cutter speed) and nine dependent variables (bulk density, expansion ratio, hardness, texture and overall acceptability) using response surface methodology (RSM).

A field experiment was conducted during kharif, 2018 at Agricultural College Farm, Bapatla to study the phenology and various weather health indices of pearlmillet grown under different spacings and dates of sowing. The crop sown on 2nd fortnight of July accumulated maximum growing degree days, photo thermal units, heat use efficiency, helio thermal use efficiency and photo thermal use efficiency whereas the highest helio thermal units were recorded under 2nd fortnight of August sowing to attain different phenological stages till maturity.

Twenty nine accessions of pearl millet along with checks were evaluated in five seasons i.e. Kharif of the year 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 for eight quantitative traits and data were subjected to regression analysis and also the analysis to detect the presence of crossover and non-crossover interactions. Three accessions IC 426855, IC 325181 and IC 139920 were identified to be promising using regression analysis, whereas five accessions IC 325794, IC 426855, IC 369859, IC 329055 and IC 325181 against standard check RAJ.

The abiotic stresses, such as soil salinity and sodicity are largely responsible for the low productivity of crops mainly due to low availability of micro-nutrients especially as zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe). Therefore, judicious management of plant nutrients in these soils is as important as their reclamation.

An experiment was conducted during rainy season of 2016 at Agronomy Farm of College of Agriculture, Bikaner (Rajasthan) to study the ‘Response of foliar supplementation of N, P and K fertilizers on yield and economics of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.)] hybrid RHB-177. The study comprised of 14 treatments of different N, P and K fertilizers applied as basal, top dressing and foliar application in randomized block design replicated thrice. Urea, DAP and KCl were used for basal application and urea as top dressing.

An experiment was conducted on plot number C-10, Agronomy Instructional Farm, C. P. College of Agriculture, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar during summer season of the year 2012 on Loamy Sand soil. Four hybrids viz., GHB 732, GHB 744, GHB 538 and GHB 558 were taken under study. Grain and dry fodder yields were significantly higher in case of hybrid GHB 558 as compared to GHB 744, GHB 538 and GHB 732. Similar response trend was observed in the growth attributes viz., plant height at 60 DAS and harvest, total tillers per plant.
