Role of Glycosylation

The glycemic variability (GV) is the fluctuation of the blood glucose (BG) in relation to the daily mean BG or mean glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c). BG oscillations can be influenced by the type of food and timing of intake, activity, psychological condition (fear of hypoglycemia), and systemic hormonal cross-talking between insulin and glucagon.

The CBL-interacting protein kinase (CIPK) gene family plays important roles in plant growth, development, and responses to abiotic stresses. To date, the CIPKs have been extensively identified and characterized in various plants. However, there have been few studies on CIPKs in Dimocarpus longan Lour (D. longan). In this study we identified eight putative CIPKs in D. longan (DlCIPKs) according to RNA-seq data.

Tannerella forsythia is a bacterial pathogen implicated in periodontal disease. Numerous virulenceassociated T. forsythia genes have been described, however, it is necessary to expand the knowledge on T. forsythia’s genome structure and genetic repertoire to further elucidate its role within pathogenesis.

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) serves as an important food source for human beings. βgalactosidase (bgal) is a glycosyl hydrolase involved in cell wall modification, which plays essential roles in plant development and environmental stress adaptation. However, the function of bgal genes in sweetpotato remains unclear.

Oxygen sensing is a near universal signaling modality that, in eukaryotes ranging from protists such as Dictyostelium and Toxoplasma to humans, involves a cytoplasmic prolyl 4-hydroxylase that utilizes oxygen and α-ketoglutarate as potentially rate-limiting substrates.

N-linked protein glycosylation plays an important role in various biological processes, including protein folding and trafficking, and cell adhesion and signaling. The acquisition of a novel N-glycosylation site may have significant effect on protein structure and function, and therefore, on the phenotype.

As an important type of post-translational modification (PTM), protein glycosylation plays a crucial role in protein stability and protein function. The abundance and ubiquity of protein glycosylation across three domains of life involving Eukarya, Bacteria and Archaea demonstrate its roles in regulating a variety of signalling and metabolic pathways.

Carbohydrates are a class of large and diverse biomolecules, ranging from a simple monosaccharide to large multi-branching glycan structures. The covalent linkage of a carbohydrate to the nitrogen atom of an asparagine, a process referred to as N-linked glycosylation, plays an important role in the physiology of many living organisms.

(BQ) This part presents an introduction to basic data about the peculiarity of simple and complex carbohydrates and glycoconjugates. Consideration of the unique structure, biosynthesis, degradation and function of glycans forms a basis for consideration of critical changes in many of these processes in disease, and lays the ground work for the chapters that follow.

Mercury (Hg) is not only a threat to public health but also a growth risk factor to plants, as it is readily accumulated by higher plants. Accumulation of Hg in plants disrupts many cellular-level functions and inhibits growth and development; however, the detoxification and tolerance mechanisms of plants to Hg stress are still not fully understood.

Secondary metabolites play an important role in the plant defensive response. They are produced as a defence mechanism against biotic stress by providing plants with antimicrobial and antioxidant weapons. In higher plants, the majority of secondary metabolites accumulate as glycoconjugates.

It is suggested that adipocytokines secreted by adipose tissue play a role in the development of obesity-related complications and diabetes. Regular aerobic exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of metabolic complications in obese type 2 diabetic subjects. The aim of this study was to compare the impact of aerobic versus resistance training on insulin resistance, adipocytokines and inflammatory cytokine in obese type 2 diabetic patients.

The traditional RSS production process begins with filtering the fresh latex to rid it of any foreign particles. In the filtered latex some water and acid, typically formic or acetic, is added. The mixture is left standing in moulds for up to 24 hours to allow coagulation, depending on the amount of acid added. The coagulated latex is then pressed into sheets of approximately 0,5 cm of thickness by means of hand or machine powered rollers or even manually using a dough roller or similar device. The final roller has a ribbed pattern, which imprints into the sheet to...

GOOD PRACTICES IN SMALL SCALE POULTRY PRODUCTION: A manual for trainers and producers in East Africa
An additional element in the prevention of introduction and spread of disease is the use of vaccination. The manual does not cover this aspect but the importance of an appropriate vaccination strategy is acknowledged, and vaccination as a possible risk management measure should form part of the overall biosecurity assessment and strategy. The purpose of the manual is to establish a minimum set of biosecurity guidelines, applicable to all poultry producers (including ratites) from hatcheries to the point of delivery at the processor.

The calculation of indirect and induced (multiplier) impacts is made on the basis of input-output (I-O) accounting tables. These matrices show the pattern of purchases and sales between industries in the economy. Base tables are constructed at a national level, and tables for smaller regions are derived by regionalizing the core BEA tables to reflect inter-regional purchasing patterns.

The idea of using markets and pricing computer re- sources is quite old. Pricing policies received consid- erable attention at the dawn of modern multi-user time sharing systems. Papers in the late 1960’s were dedi- cated to automated pricing policies for computer time [18, 19, 20]. As research, this work was short-lived. The complexity of these schemes relative to their benefit, combined with the environment of time-shared systems (mostly cooperative, mostly controlled by a single en- tity) quickly made pricing for shared resource allocation a low priority.
