This report provides baseline information on investigations undertaken as part of the Collaboration for Agriculture and Rural Development CARD Project 050/04VIE “Improvement of export and domestic markets for Vietnamese fruit through improved post-harvest and supply chain management”. This collaborative project is funded by AusAID and administered by Hassall and Associates International.

The dissertation aims to clarify the theoretical issues about rural economic development, analyzing and assessing the current situation of rural economic development in Poland in the early decades of the twenty-first century, evaluating the similarities and differences specials and conditions applicable to Vietnam. The Government of Vietnam’s (GoV) Socio-Economic Plan outlines the government’s expectations for agriculture and rural development. The Agriculture Sector GDP in 2009 was 220 trillion VND, approximately 18% of total GDP. Agriculture's share of GDP has steadily declined GoV and while the GDP increased by 5.3% during 2009, the agriculture GDP increased by only 1.8%. Never-the-less government expects GDP growth in the agriculture sector to increase annually by 3 – 5 %.

The overall objective of the project is to increase food security and income of rural Vietnamese in coastal communities by improving the profitability, and environmental sustainability, of intensive aquaculture in Vietnam. The damage caused by rodents in agricultural systems is an important impediment to rural development in the Mekong Delta region. This proposal capitalises on the research findings and on the measurement of farmers' belief and practises associated with rodent control in the Mekong Delta.

The study provides a comprehensive picture of the animal feed sector in Vietnam (both supply and demand side) upon data collected from 2 main surveys: feed mill survey investigating the supply side and producer survey investigating the demand side. The results show that, on the supply side, SMEs appear to have less competitiveness than large ones. That is reflected in some aspects such as higher production costs per kg output, using more labor, limited quality control, limited access to capital and land, and many small enterprises have losses.

"Investigation and control of the rice in the field and during harvest in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam" project is part of the Cooperation Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD) between the Ministry of Agriculture and rural Development of Vietnam (Ministry of Agriculture and rural Development) VACO Australian International Development (AusAID). The purpose of this project is to help households and small farmers in Vietnam to improve rice quality and prices to improve their income. They clam approximately 500 species, widely distributed in coastal intertidal zone of tropical temperate countries. Our country has about 40 species of 7 breed groups, distributed along the coast from north to south. Northern coastal areas have clam oil (Meretrix lime), clam password (Meretrix llusoria Rumplius). Southern coastal areas have clam (Meretrix lyrata Sowerby). Clams are mollusks team has great potential in the tide country. Culture technique is not complicated, short cycle, investment less valuable export.
