Women are the back bone of household activities. They spend daily almost 13-14 hours on household work and caring the family members. The household activities consists of cooking, washing clothes, washing utensils and mopping the floor. The rural women even carry out farm work (sowing, Transplanting, harvesting and Threshing) while urban women are not involved in farm work. However no matter how much they do and how much time they spent in performing, these activities, it will go un-noticed because of its non-economic value.

Draught animals are major source of motive power for majority of farmers. In India bullocks, buffaloes, camels, horses, mules and donkeys are common draught animals. These animals perform different field operations and are also used for rural transportation. In Indian agriculture, bullock farming operations are being carried out by small and marginal farmers and bullock power play an important role in many works. The availability of electric power in rural areas is a serious problem.

To gain a better understanding of the possible role of credit in improving house- hold food security and alleviating poverty in Malawi, in November 1994 the Inter- national Food Policy Research Institute and the Department of Rural Development, Bunda College of Agriculture, University of Malawi, initiated a research program on rural financial markets and household food security in Malawi. The main objective of the research program was to analyze the determinants of access to credit in Malawi and its impact on farm and nonfarm income and on household food security.
