Safflower Carthamus tinctorius L.
-
Flowers of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) have been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine because of their ability to improve cerebral blood flow. The major active ingredients in safflower are flavonoids. To date, few flavonoid biosynthesis genes have been cloned from this species. In our previous research, four isoform chalcone isomerase genes were screened. In this study, a new chalcone isomerase gene (designated as CtCHI-N) was cloned from a safflower cDNA library. A 696-bp cDNA for CtCHI-N was cloned, and its sequence was subsequently analyzed.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an oilseed crop in the Compositae (a.k.a. Asteraceae) that is valued for its oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Here, we present an analysis of the genetic architecture of safflower domestication and compare our findings to those from sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), an independently domesticated oilseed crop within the same family.

A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of sulphur and spacing on yield and economics of safflower. The experiment was laid out in randomized Block Design, with 8 treatments, each replicated trice, in the rabi 2019 with the different levels of Sulphur (0,10,20,30 kg S/ha) and Spacing (20cm x 10cm,30cm x 10cm) respectively at Crop Research Farm, Department of Agronomy, SHUATS, Prayagraj,(U.P). Application of Sulphur and Spacing significantly influenced the yield and economics.

Genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance studies in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.)
The study was carried out at Agricultural Research Station, Tandur (PJTSAU) during Rabi, 2017-18 to determine genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance estimates in thirty genotypes of safflower. Analysis of variance involving a set of thirty genotypes of safflower for seven quantitative characters viz., days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of effective capitula/plant, number of seeds/capitulum, test weight (g) and seed yield (kg/ha) revealed highly significant mean sum of squares for all the characters indicating greater diversity among the genotypes.

owledge of genetic diversity and relationship among breeding material at molecular level has significant impact on safflower improvement. Genetic diversity of eight parental genotypes of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) was investigated at DNA level with Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) procedure. Forty RAPD primers generated 943 alleles, out of which 679 alleles were found polymorphic, resulting 72.00 per cent polymorphism. The similarity coefficient ranged from 0.42 to 0.76 with an average of 0.

A field experiment was carried out during rabiseas on of 2016-17 at the Agricultural College Farm, Palli Siksha Bhavana (Institute of Agriculture), Visva-Bharati University, Sriniketan, Birbhum, West Bengal, India to study the effect of different sources and levels of sulphur on safflower. Experimental findings revealed that the use of different sources and levels of sulphur had significant effect in influencing the growth parameters, yield attributes. Among the levels and sources of Sulphur, ZnSO4 @ 40 kg S ha-1 resulted maximum growth parameters, yield attributes and yield of safflower.

Safflower is one of the old domesticated crops and mostly cultivated for oil purpose. Large numbers of variability were found in this crop and through the successful breeding programme the problems can be eradicated. The experiment was conducted at BTC College of Agriculture and Research station, Bilaspur (C.G.) in Rabi season during 2017- 18.The experimental material consisted of a population of 26 genotypes included two checks A1 (NC) and PBNS-12 (C) with laid out in Randomized block design.

Effect of water deficiency on seed quality and physiological traits of different safflower genotypes
Safflower is one of the most adapted oilseed crops to the drought-prone arid lands. This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of water deficiency on some physiological traits such as proline content, soluble carbohydrate content, relative water content (RWC), and seed quality using 64 safflower genotypes grown under normal and water-deficient field conditions.
