The model also promised a stable foundation to develop into a larger−scale model with more treatment stages and low electricity consumption. Moreover, it is possible to reuse the products produced by the ED model with two separate streams: a concentrated stream that can be applied to separate salts and a dilute stream that can be used as domestic water.

Up to 5% of wastewater generated worldwide is highly saline effluent. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been considered as a promising saline wastewater treatment, which uses microorganisms to convert organic compounds into electrical energy. This study investigated lab-scale MFCs to evaluate the effect of chloride at different concentrations (0, 5, 10 and 20 g/l NaCl) on the performance of the MFC by examining its electrical generation and wastewater treatment efficiency.

The aim of this work was to understand involvement of PARylation in inducing enzymatic antioxidant defence and alternative electron sinks in response to salinity. For this purpose A. thaliana plants were treated with 3-aminobenzamide (3-AB), which is a PARP inhibitor, in the presence of 100 mM NaCl. The 3-AB treatment induced plant fresh weight under control and salinity conditions. Moreover, 100 mM NaCl + 3-AB treated plants had lower lipid peroxidation when compared to 100 mM NaCl group indicating mitigation of oxidative stress.

The present study evaluated the possible potential of amino acids in enhancing the salinity tolerance in spinach and identified the probable underlying mechanisms. The experiment comprised of two factors viz. amino acids with total of seven treatments; control, salinity (sal) 100 mM, Methionine + sal, Phenylalanine + sal, Proline + sal, Tyrosine + sal, Combined amino acids + sal, and two spinach cultivars (Desi Palak and VRI-2019).

"Ameliorative effects of nitric oxide on growth, physiology and biochemistry of chickpea plants under salinity stress" was conducted to evaluate the effect of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) treatments on two chickpea cultivars (Cagatay and Inci) under salt stress conditions. Different NO doses (0. 75 and 100 µM sodium nitroprusside (SNP)) as an NO source were applied to chickpea plants grown under saline (presence of 50 and 100 mM of NaCl) and nonsaline conditions.

"In vitro salinity stress mediates grass pea genotypes’ (Lathyrus sativus L.) responses" was carried out to determine the tolerance of grass pea genotypes to salinity stress at callus and seedling stages under in vitro conditions. The calli and seedlings of six selected tolerant genotypes based on the primary screening in the field were separately exposed to salinity treatments (0, 125 mM) in vitro.

This study aimed to identify the effects of safflower genotypes for individual and combined effects of PEG 6000 and NaCl stress imposed at early seed germination stages, determine correlation coefficients among traits of safflower genotypes under stress treatments, and interpret the interrelationship of treatments × safflower genotypes interaction by principal component analysis.

Najas indica (Willd.) Cham is known as a freshwater species of submerged aquatic vegetation. However, this species is widely distributed in both freshwater and brackish environments. This study examined the survival, growth rate and morphological performance of N. indica collected from the Cau Hai lagoon (Thua Thien Hue) against different salinity treatments in a mesocosm experiment to determine the optimal salinity for the species.

The results indicated that Number of tillers/plant, number of leaves/plant, leaves area/plant at vegetative stage, biomass, days to heading, number of kernels/spike, 1000-kerenl weight, grain yield, K+ concentration and K+/Na+ ratio were decreased under salinity treatments as compared with control, and hence Na+ concentration was increased.

Results obtained indicated that both RS-compost and OMW-compost had positive effects on soil properties where barley growth and productivity were more than the conventional organic fertilization under saline conditions; yet, applying OMW-compost under the saline conditions should be under precautions to prevent increasing the EC of the soil.

Cystic fbrosis (CF) is a life-threatening multiorgan genetic disease, particularly affecting the lungs, where recurrent infections are the main cause of reduced life expectancy. In CF, mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein impair transepithelial electrolyte and water transport, resulting in airway dehydration, and a thickening of the mucus associated with abnormal viscoelastic properties.

Although phosphorus supplementation (SP) has been shown to improve salinity tolerance in plants, crosstalk between hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or L-cysteine desulfhydrase (LDES) and SP-induced salinity tolerance needs to be elucidated. Thus, prior to initiation of stress treatment, young seedlings were transferred to aqueous solution containing the scavenger of H2S, 0.1 mM hypotaurine (HT), or the inhibitor of LDES, 0.3 mM DL-propargylglycine (PAG), for 12 h. The plants grown under control (no NaCl added) or salinity stress (SS; 100 mM NaCl) were then supplemented with SP (2.

The aim of this study was to confirm the presence of BADH gene and control whether it plays an important role to protect white clover (Trifolium repens L.) against oxidative, salt, and drought stresses. Three genotypes possessing BADH and 1 genotype lacking BADH were selected, considering the expression levels of BADH in response to methyl viologen mediated oxidative stress. The genotypes possessing BADH displayed significantly less ion leakage under oxidative stress treatment, compared to that lacking BADH.

Soil salinity threatens the yield and food security worldwide and use of halophytes might be a valid option to cope with devastating salinity effects. The present investigation was accomplished to evaluate the role of glycine betaine (GB) as presowing seed treatment on growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange attributes, enzymatic antioxidants, lipid peroxidation (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ), endogenous GB, total soluble proteins (TSP), and yield in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) under saline conditions.

The aim of this study was to verify the effects of application of H2O2 on salt tolerance and oil production in basil cv. ‘Gennaro de Menta’ grown in a hydroponic system. Seedlings were subjected to 3 levels of H2O2 (0, 1, and 1000 μM) in a nutrient solution during 2 different exposure periods (24 and 48 h) and 2 levels of NaCl (0 and 80 mM). The plants were harvested at preflowering (at 15 days) and postflowering (at 25 days). At 25 days, the application of 1 μM H2O2 /48 h and its reapplication at preflowering increased leaf dry mass production compared to the other salt treatments.
