Accurate lung cancer classification is crucial to guide therapeutic decisions. However, histological subtyping by pathologists requires tumor tissue—a necessity that is often intrinsically associated with procedural difficulties. The analysis of circulating tumor DNA present in minimal-invasive blood samples, referred to as liquid biopsies, could therefore emerge as an attractive alternative.

Minerals, with their intricate chemical compositions and crystalline structures, play a pivotal role in diverse chemical processes, applications, and research. Traditionally, their classification was achieved through observational and chemical techniques. However, with increasing sample sizes, these methods often proved time-consuming. Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL) promise transformative improvements in the speed and accuracy of mineral classification.

This book presents a sampling of work in the field. The primary target is the researcher or student who wishes to work in privacy-preserving data mining; the goal is to give a background on approaches along with details showing how to develop specific solutions within each approach. The book is organized much like a typical data mining text, with discussion of privacy-preserving solutions to particular data mining tasks.

Rocks contain a large number of elements such as Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, and Ti. The determination of those element contents is important in geological and geographical exploration as well as the original identification and classification of rocks. In the present study, we analyzed rock samples after being treated by microwave using flame atomic and molecular absorption spectroscopy.

In this paper, we build an incremental algorithm to find the approximate reduct according to the combined filter-wrapper approach. Experimental results on a number of sample datasets show that the proposed incremental algorithm is more efficient than some other incremental algorithms following the filter approach in terms of the number of reductive set attributes and classification accuracy.

Weed identification helps ensure crop yield and realize precision agriculture. Although the deep learning-based methods have achieved high performance, their needed large-scale annotated data is difficult to obtain, and the massive parameters lead to difficulties in model deployment in embedded applications. To develop efficient crop weeds classification system, we propose a dissimilarity-based method to select few but representative samples and consider data diversity.

The paper explores the aspect of writer engagement through the emphasis of first person pronoun ‘we’ in essay writing written by Chinese student-writers. The coding of independent and dependent variables on the base of frequency and the classification of clause from the selected writing samples are analyzed in the combination of quantitative and qualitative analyses for we and its interaction with the writing topic.

Twenty marine sediment samples have been collected in the Quaternary sediments in the southwest deep-depression East Sea region to study the foraminifera’s characterization. They all belong to the planktonic foraminifer group, living in the deep sea. Their indicator ages range from Miocene to Recent.

One of the main challenges in metagenomics is the identification of microorganisms in clinical and environmental samples. While an extensive and heterogeneous set of computational tools is available to classify microorganisms using whole-genome shotgun sequencing data, comprehensive comparisons of these methods are limited.

People with neurodegenerative disorders show diverse clinical syndromes, genetic heterogeneity, and distinct brain pathological changes, but studies report overlap between these features. DNA methylation (DNAm) provides a way to explore this overlap and heterogeneity as it is determined by the combined effects of genetic variation and the environment.

The analysis on the location and dispersion statistics of the performance measures was further enlightened on: (i) the effect of a resampling method on the performance of LDA, and (ii) the enhancement in the learning fairness of LDA on objects regardless of sample size, hence reducing the effect of the curse of class imbalance.

In recent years several different fields, such as ecology, medicine and microbiology, have experienced an unprecedented development due to the possibility of direct sequencing of microbioimic samples. Among problems that researchers in the field have to deal with, taxonomic classification of metagenomic reads is one of the most challenging. State of the art methods classify single reads with almost 100% precision. However, very often, the performance in terms of recall falls at about 50%.
