Antifungal activities of the three mushrooms Pleurotus pulmonarius, Pleurotus florida and Schizophyllum commune ethanol extracts were evaluated against some plant pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Alternaria solani, Colletotrichum graminicola, Fusarium oxysporum) by using agar well diffusion method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was investigated for 1-20 mg/ml concentration to find out the lowest concentration of the sample that inhibits the growth of the test organisms.

Mushroom fungi secrete antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral bioactive compounds of therapeutic and pharmacological value. Very limited work has been done on the exploration of antimicrobial principles from macrobasidiomycetes against plant pathogens. In this view, a study was proposed to screen eight mushroom fungi viz.

Twelve diff erent methods were compared for storage of a newly isolated mushroom strain, Schizophyllum commune Fr. The fungal strain was stored in different media [sterile distilled water (SDW), glycerol (15%) or media including trehalose], in different forms (mycelium-colonised wheat seeds, mycelium-colonised agar plugs) and at different temperatures (+4, +20, –20 °C).

Schizophyllum commune a,a-trehalose phosphorylase utilizes a glycosyl-transferase-like catalytic mechanism to convert its disaccharide substrate into a-d-glucose 1-phosphate and a-d-glucose. Recruitment of phosphate by the free enzyme inducesa,a-trehalose binding recognition and promotes the catalytic steps.

Basidiomycetes constitute a natural source of biologically active metabolites. Many basidiomycetes have been classified by the National Cancer Institute of the United States as antitumor agents exhibiting an immunomodulatory activity.1 The therapeutic activity is mainly related to polysaccharides or protein-bound polysaccharides, such as glucans, heterogalactans, and glucanproteins, which are present either in the mycelium or in the fruit body.2–6 Among these polysaccharides are b-D-glucans, which are of particular interest because of their pharmacological properties.
