Ebook "Scientific writing and communication in agriculture and natural resources" is to help early career professionals in agriculture and natural resources write their research papers for high-quality journals and present their results properly at professional meetings. Different fields have different conventions for writing style such that the authors of the book have found it difficult to recommend to young scientists in these fields a specific book or source material out of the several that are available as the “go to” guide.

So begins our journey. It is a journey that others have taken before us; in fact, in reaching our destination we will rely on the efforts of those who came before. Just as Columbus retraced steps taken by others before him (perhaps as long as two millennia before he sailed), so we gratefully acknowledge the work of those who went before. Yet, like the voyage of Columbus, there is a sense of beginning, a tenor to the enterprise that makes it a voyage of discovery.

For some overseas students, essays have to be written in the unfamiliar rhetorical styles of the target culture (Crowe & Peterson, 1995). An added complexity is that different cultural conventions are involved in academic argument. These conventions are important from the point of view of the teacher in that overseas students may have a logical orientation, but it may be perceived to be illogical to a reader anticipating a different culturally-constrained demonstration of logic.

Automated essay scoring is now an established capability used from elementary school through graduate school for purposes of instruction and assessment. Newer applications provide automated diagnostic feedback about student writing. Feedback includes errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics, comments about writing style, and evaluation of discourse structure. This paper reports on a system that evaluates a characteristic of lower quality essay writing style: repetitious word use.

From its inception as a brief journal article in 1929, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association has been designed to advance scholarship by setting sound and rigorous standards for scientific communication. The creators of the 1929 manuscript included psychologists, anthropologists, and business managers who convened under the sponsorship of the National Research Council. They sought to establish a simple set of procedures, or style rules, that would codify the many components of scientific writing to increase the ease of reading comprehension.

Hundreds of people contributed to this book. Most of them were researchers who attended workshops and courses in which we collectively applied concepts about thinking and reasoning to the task of converting ideas and experimental data into focused articles for publication. They came from many countries and spoke many languages.

This essay is not a complete text on ´How to write ...´. Nor is it designed - to replace existing works on literary style or the editorial directives issued by journals. Rather it is intended to help research students and scientists to avoid faults; in particular, faults I have encountered in scientific papers. Most of the notions are not new but seem to need repeating; some may be novel. I am grateful to a dozen colleagues for their comments and suggestions.
