Lightweight structures with soft inclusion material, such as hollow core slabs, foam sandwich wall, pervious pavement are widely used in construction engineering for sustainable goals. Voids and soft inclusion can be modeled as a very soft material, while the main material is modeled with its original rigidity, which is so much higher than inclusion’s one.

In this paper, we study the Neumann problem for second order hyperbolic equations without initial data in nonsmooth domains. Our intension was to prove the existence of a generalized solution to this problem by applying the results of this problem to the initial data.

Phase transition and the Casimir effect are studied in the complex scalar field with one spatial dimension to be compactified. It is shown that the phase transition is of the second order and the Casimir effect behaves quite differently depending on whether it’s under periodic or anti-periodic boundary conditions.

We have isolated and characterized a second [Fe]-hydro-genasegene fromthegreenalga,Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. TheHydA2gene encodes a protein of 505 amino acids that is 74% similar and 68% identical to the known HydA1 hydrogenase fromC. reinhardtii.HydA2 contains all the conserved residues and motifs found in the catalytic core of the family of [Fe]-hydrogenases. We demonstrate that both theHydA1and theHydA2transcripts are expressed upon anaerobic induction, achieved either by neutral gas purging or by sulfur deprivation of the cultures. ...

In eukaryotes, pre-rRNA processing depends on a large number of non-ribosomal trans-acting factors that form large and intriguingly organized complexes. A novel nucleolar protein, Nop53p, was isolated by using Nop17p as bait in the yeast two-hybrid system. Nop53p also interacts with a second nucleolar protein, Nip7p. A carbon source-conditional strain with the NOP53coding sequence under the control of theGAL1promoter did not grow in glucose-containing medium, showing the phenotype of an essential gene. ...

Ribonuclease A contains two exposed loop regions, around Ala20 andAsn34. Only the loop aroundAla20 is sufficiently flexible even under native conditions to allow cleavage by nonspecific proteases. In contrast, the loop around Asn34 (together with the adjacentb-sheet aroundThr45) is the first region of the ribonuclease A molecule that becomes sus-ceptible to thermolysin and trypsin under unfolding condi-tions. This second region therefore has been suggested to be involved in early steps of unfolding and was designated as the unfolding region of the ribonuclease A molecule....

ON A PERIODIC BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM FOR SECOND-ORDER LINEAR FUNCTIONAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS S. MUKHIGULASHVILI Received 26 October 2004 and in revised form 7 March 2005 Unimprovable efficient sufficient conditions are established for the unique solvability of the periodic problem u (t) = (u)(t) + q(t) for 0 ≤ t ≤ ω, u(i) (0) = u(i) (ω) (i = 0,1), where ω 0, : C([0,ω]) → L([0,ω]) is a linear bounded operator, and q ∈ L([0,ω]). 1. Introduction Consider the equation u (t) = (u)(t) + q(t) for 0 ≤ t ≤ ω with the periodic boundary conditions u(i) (0) = u(i)...

PERIODIC SOLUTIONS OF NONLINEAR SECOND-ORDER DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS ´ JESUS RODRIGUEZ AND DEBRA LYNN ETHERIDGE Received 6 August 2004 We establish conditions for the existence of periodic solutions of nonlinear, second-order difference equations of the form y(t + 2) + by(t + 1) + cy(t) = f (y(t)), where c = 0 and f : R → R is continuous. In our main result we assume that f exhibits sublinear growth and that there is a constant β 0 such that u f (u) 0 whenever |u| ≥ β. For such an equation we prove that if N is an odd...

NONOSCILLATORY HALF-LINEAR DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS AND RECESSIVE SOLUTIONS ˇ ´ MARIELLA CECCHI, ZUZANA DOSLA, AND MAURO MARINI Received 30 January 2004 and in revised form 26 May 2004 Recessive and dominant solutions for the nonoscillatory half-linear difference equation are investigated. By using a uniqueness result for the zero-convergent solutions satisfying a suitable final condition, we prove that recessive solutions are the “smallest solutions in a neighborhood of infinity,” like in the linear case. Other asymptotic properties of recessive and dominant solutions are treated too. 1.

FIRST- AND SECOND-ORDER DYNAMIC EQUATIONS WITH IMPULSE F. M. ATICI AND D. C. BILES Received 3 December 2004 and in revised form 11 February 2005 We present existence results for discontinuous first- and continuous second-order dynamic equations on a time scale subject to fixed-time impulses and nonlinear boundary conditions. 1. Introduction We first briefly survey the recent results for existence of solutions to first-order problems with fixed-time impulses. Periodic boundary conditions using upper and lower solutions were considered in [19], using degree theory.

RATE OF CONVERGENCE OF SOLUTIONS OF RATIONAL DIFFERENCE EQUATION OF SECOND ORDER ˇ ´ ´ S. KALABUSIC AND M. R. S. KULENOVIC Received 13 August 2003 and in revised form 7 October 2003 We investigate the rate of convergence of solutions of some special cases of the equation xn+1 = (α + βxn + γxn−1 )/(A + Bxn + Cxn−1 ), n = 0,1,..., with positive parameters and nonnegative initial conditions. We give precise results about the rate of convergence of the solutions that converge to the equilibrium or period-two solution by using Poincar´ ’s e theorem and an improvement of Perron’s...

FINITE DIFFERENCE SCHEMES WITH MONOTONE OPERATORS N. C. APREUTESEI Received 13 October 2003 and in revised form 10 December 2003 To the memory of my mother, Liliana Several existence theorems are given for some second-order difference equations associated with maximal monotone operators in Hilbert spaces. Boundary conditions of monotone type are attached. The main tool used here is the theory of maximal monotone operators. 1. Introduction In [1, 2], the authors proved the existence of the solution of the boundary value problem p(t)u (t) + r(t)u (t) ∈ Au(t) + f (t), u (0) ∈ α u(0) − a , a.e.
