Adolescents have high nutritional needs but usually engage in unhealthy eating which has resulted into an irregular meal consumption pattern especially skipping of breakfast which has a significant impact on their health in adulthood. An innovative approach to stimulate the production of plant secondary metabolites (PSM) is the use of encapsulated bioactive agents. Zinc-alginate microparticles [microspheres (ALG/Zn) and microcapsules (CS/ALG/Zn)] were applied near the root zone of soilless cultivated strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne) to ensure a constant supply of an essential micronutrient zinc ions throughout the whole period of maturation.

Field studies were conducted on application of zinc and boron to summer rice crop on Alfisols at Naganahalli village, Mysore district, Karnataka. The results showed that external application of zinc as ZnSO4 @ 20 kg ha-1 and boron as borax @ 4 kg ha-1 significantly enhanced the plant height number of tillers hill-1 , grains per panicle, thousand grain weight, grain yield and straw yield of paddy. Further there was significant increase in major (N, P and K), secondary (S, Ca and Mg) and micronutrient (Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and B) status of soils.

Dietary diversity (DD) has been identified as a potentially useful indicator of micronutrient status. Adolescents eating less number of food groups may be at the risk of nutritional deficiency. This study was aimed to determine the dietary diversity in the diets of adolescents and to find its correlation with the probability of adequacy of five micronutrients. Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a major oilseed crop of our country and edible oil economy primarily depends upon groundnut production. Intensive cropping leads to deficiency of secondary and micronutrients, which is the main constraint for low yield of groundnut. A survey based study was carried out to assess the secondary and micronutrient availability in grape orchards of Vijayapura taluka of northern Karnataka. Based on the fertilizer nutrient inputs, the grape orchards were grouped into three categories namely, low fertilizer users (n=19), medium fertilizer users (n=26) and high fertilizer users (n=15). The grape orchard soils recorded slightly to medium alkaline soil reactions.

Rice is the major crop cultivated during kharif in eastern region of India, particularly in Odisha. Inconsistent and erratic behaviour of monsoon, high input costs and low market price at farm gate for rice is becoming unremunerative at times. Crop diversification with high potential crops seems to be a viable solution for the above situations. Two hundred and seventy (270) geo-referenced (GPS based) composite surface soil samples (0-15cm) were collected from 8 mandals of Prudential sugar factory zone, of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. Soil samples were analyzed for exchangeable Ca, Mg and DTPA extractable micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn). The results revealed that exchangeable calcium and magnesium were ranged from 1 to 6.8 cmol (p+) kg-1 and 0.3 to 6.8 cmol (p+) kg-1 soil with a mean values of 3.43 cmol (p+) kg-1 soil and 3.44 cmol (p+) kg-1 soil respectively.

The decline in the rice crop responses to applied fertilizer nutrients, inter alia, could be ascribed to emerging nutrient deficiencies on account of modern era of agriculture and inadequate or imbalanced application of fertilizers.
