  • The lectin from Sao bean seeds was purified by two steps of chromatography: Sephadex G-75 gel filtration and DEAE Trysacry ion exchange chromatography. The research results showed that the purity of lectin was 17.5 times higher than that of the first extract. The molecular weight of lectin from Sao bean seeds was determined about 75 kDa.

  • Pigeonpea has considerable extent of insect-aided natural out-crossing that impedes genetic purity of seeds. Pre-anthesis cleistogamy in pigeonpea promotes self-pollination which helps in maintaining genetic purity.

  • In consequence, discriminating between elite lines and their hybrids is often difficult. The present work reports the results of applying both methods, RAPDs and ISSR, to assess the genetic purity of hybrid seeds.

  • In the present study, cytoplasmic male sterility derived from A2 cytoplasm of pigeonpea was combined with four leaf type agronomic backgrounds by using backcrossing programme These four leaf shapes were recessive in the expression against lanceolatus leaf shape. These naked eye polymorphic (NEP) markers will be useful for maintaining purity of hybrid seeds if coupled with cytoplasmic male sterility hence present investigation was conducted.

  • The quality seed production in rice is ensured by different classes of seed involving Nucleus, Breeder, Foundation and Certified seed at different cropping stages attributing seed requirement of farmers at diversified and sustainable crop production of rice. In this regard, the maintenance breeding attributed as a foremost factor for wider spread of a particular rice variety. The chance of outcrossing and genetic drift were removed through sustained maintenance breeding to maintain the seed purity and thereby contributing to 30 to 40 per cent higher crop production.

  • In the present study SSR markers were shown to be polymorphic between parents which would help in establishing the genetic purity of hybrids in commercial seed lots. Also, few SSRs were found to discriminate among the set of hybrids which will ease the seed identity of competing hybrids in seed chain. Low probability of identity based on marker information suggests that a set of markers identified in present study can be efficiently used in establishing distinctness, identity and purity of hybrids in open markets after their release.

  • The changing climate adversely affect the morphological characters of plant which, ultimate effect the identification of off types in seed production programme. This also leads to effect the genetic purity in seed production programme. To overcome this problem selection of progeny and its breeding depend upon the genetic variability in population.

  • The study intended to characterize fifteen elite Indian rice varieties with the help of molecular markers, to develop molecular ID and to analyze the genetic purity of four selected varieties viz., MTU 1010, MTU 7029, BPT 5204 and Improved Samba Mashuri in different seed lots through Grow-Out Test (GOT) and molecular marker-based assays. The results of both assays were also compared.

  • The genetic polymorphism revealed by biochemical markers (protein and isozymes) in plant population have been extensively used to, assess the genetic variability, confirm hybridity of F1s, assure purity of cultivar and establish relationship between species. Electrophoretic protein analysis holds potential utility in breeding programmes of wheat through helping in the unequivocal characterization of varieties used. Sixteen wheat genotypes along with their 32 F1’s were characterized by using protein profile polymorphism in seeds through SDS-PAGE.

  • Legitimacy in breeding and commercial crop production depends on optimised protocols to ensure purity of crosses and correct field planting of material. In oil palm, the presence of three fruit forms permits these assumptions to be tested, although only after field planting.

  • Microsatellite markers can be used for fingerprinting of hybrids, assessing variation within parental lines and testing the genetic purity of hybrid seed lot. In this study 75 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers well distributed on all the 10 chromosomes were employed for fingerprinting of six popular maize hybrids and their parental lines. Seven SSR markers were found to be polymorphic and produced unique fingerprints for the different hybrids. These markers can be used as referral markers for unambiguous identification and protection of the hybrids.

  • The occurrence of micronutrient deficiencies in crops has increased markedly in recent years due to intensive cropping, soil erosion, leaching, liming of acid soils, reduced use of manures, increased purity of chemical fertilizers and use of marginal lands for crop production. Among the micronutrients, the boron plays an important role in flowering and fertilization process and hence boosting yield and quality of crop produce.

  • Seed health testing to detect seed mycoflora and other parameters like germination status, physical purity, moisture, seedling length and seed vigour index are very important component of management of crop diseases. The legume seeds particularly black gram seeds were screened against these parameters using blotter plate method from untreated seeds as per the International rules for seed testing in the laboratory of Seed Science and Technology and Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, Bhawanipatna.

  • Chickpea (Cicer arietinum.) is grown extensively in India as an important legume crops. A quality seed is required to increase the production of chickpea qualitatively and quantitatively. Hence it is imperative that seeds must be tested for seed-borne mycoflora (seed-health), before they are sown in the field. In the context, a study was conducted to work out the diversity of seed-borne mycoflora in relation to different chickpea varieties.

  • A case study was conducted by Agricultural Extension Education Center, Koppal with an innovative ground nut grower and small scale entrepreneur for a period of two years. Cold press oil extraction unit established by the farmer could successfully extract 3.60 tons of oil seeds in a month with a net savings of Rs. 16485. The unit became self sustain in a span of one year and could generate employment of 365 man days. The consumers are satisfied with the quality and purity of oil which they purchased for consumption.
