In vegetable growing, seedling is the foundation of a successful growing. Use of commercial seedlings have become more popular in recent years due to effective use of labour and land and economic concerns. It is aimed to produce small vigorous seedlings with sufficient roots and free of diseases and pests in the commercial seedling enterprises. Although certain cultural applications are used for production of small-sized seedlings, growth retarding chemicals are generally preferred due to their effective results.

In addition to the widely recognized advantages of disease tolerance and high crop yields through vigorous attainment of nutrients, grafting technology is also highly effective in ameliorating crop losses caused by adverse environmental conditions such as low soil temperature and high soil salts, especially under protected cultivations where successive cropping or continuous farming is routinely practiced. An experiment was conducted to assess the storability of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seed lots based on vigour tests during 2015-16. Nineteen seed lots with varying vigour levels based on different germination percentages were taken and replicated four times. The results indicated that seeds with higher vigour were able to retain the vigour for longer period (at the end of storage period of six months). The vigorous lots recorded higher quality parameters at the end of storage period.

Screening of 230 F4 segregants of cross DC 615 (Susceptible parent) × Dharwad local (Resistant parent) along with checks (Dharwad local, DC 615, DC 15, DCS 47-1 and C 152) was carried out against bruchids (Callosobruchus maculatus) at the Department of Genetics and plant Breeding, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. Out of 230 segregants, 36 were highly resistant, 43 moderately resistant, 110 least susceptible, 34 moderately susceptible and 7 were found to be highly susceptible.

The experiment was deigned to find out the best alternative way to grow healthy tomato seedling under water stress condition. Three different protected and unprotected conditions (Polyhouse, Low tunnel and open field condition) were selected for sowing of seedling. Open field condition was taken up as a control. Production of healthy and vigorous tomato seedling is most important factor in successful commercial production and yield of quality tomato fruits.

Streptomyces spp. ANSP4 and ANSCa22 isolated earlier from rhizospheric soil of Akola district of Maharashtra were studied for their biocontrol potential against Rhizoctonia bataticola isolates from the same region. Both Streptomyces strains ANSP4 and ANSCa22 revealed growth inhibition of Rhizoctonia bataticola isolates R1 and R2 by dual culture method. Efficacy of independent applications of these strains on seedlings vigor index (SVI) of R1 inoculated Soybean seeds were tested by paper towel method. R1 inoculation of healthy soybean seeds resulted in drastic reduction in SVI from 1515.

Trichoderma species are commonly used as biological control agents against phytopathogenic fungi and some isolates are able to improve plant growth. In this study, the effects of seven Trichoderma isolates from Madhya Pradesh was examined in chilli for enhancing seedling and plant vigor via two way introduction methods (inoculating seed with Trichoderma as seed treatment and also seed treatment with three foliar sprays). Different isolates of Trichoderma spp. significantly influenced the root length, shoot length and number of leaves of chilli at seedling stage.
