Select Readings series

The Longman Academic Reading Series is a five-level series that prepares English language learners for academic work. High-interest readings cover a variety of subjects, including art history, nutrition, American literature, and forensics. Each chapter of each book in the series focuses on an engaging theme from a wide range of academic subjects, such as art, health sciences, animal behavior, and government. The reading selections in each chapter (two readings in Level 1 and three in Levels 2-5) are chosen to provide different and intriguing perspectives on the theme.

This paper reports the results of a project on exploring the language input of reading texts in a book series used in teaching reading for first-year English-major students at University of Foreign languages, Hue University. It aims at investigating text topics, genres, length, language difficulty level, and students’ as well as teachers’ perceptions of the studied texts in an attempt to facilitate students’ reading comprehension. Thirty-two reading texts were studied by using a descriptive-analytical approach.
