Ebook "Uncertainty in biology: A computational modeling approach" wants to address four main issues related to the building and validation of computational models of biomedical processes: (1) Modeling establishment under uncertainty; (2) Model selection and parameter fitting; (3) Sensitivity analysis and model adaptation; (4) Model predictions under uncertainty in each of the abovementioned areas, the book discusses a number of key-techniques by means of a general theoretical description followed by one or more practical examples.

Ebook "Analysis of kinetic reaction mechanisms" describes methods for the analysis of reaction mechanisms that are applicable in all these fields. Topics addressed include: how sensitivity and uncertainty analyses allow the calculation of the overall uncertainty of simulation results and the identification of the most important input parameters, the ways in which mechanisms can be reduced without losing important kinetic and dynamic detail, and the application of reduced models for more accurate engineering optimizations.

In this paper, we present a reduced-order modeling approach to study the Molten Salt Fast Reactor (MSFR). Our approach is nonintrusive and based on the proper orthogonal decomposition method. We include adaptivity in selecting the sampling points both in time and parameter space. Steady-state and transient analysis were both performed using the developed models.

This study conducted a sensitivity analysis of physical models in RELAP5 code based on experimental data measured on the FEBA test facility. Sixteen physical models have been selected for sensitivity analysis to find the most important models that influence the calculation results. Based on two criteria, the maximum cladding temperature and the quench time, the sensitivity analysis results show that four physical models significantly impact the calculation result. Four chosen physical models are considered further in the next step of their uncertainty evaluation.

A standard procedure in many areas of bioinformatics is to use a single multiple sequence alignment (MSA) as the basis for various types of analysis. However, downstream results may be highly sensitive to the alignment used, and neglecting the uncertainty in the alignment can lead to significant bias in the resulting inference.

Solutions to stochastic Boolean models are usually estimated by Monte Carlo simulations, but as the state space of these models can be enormous, there is an inherent uncertainty about the accuracy of Monte Carlo estimates and whether simulations have reached all attractors.

This article shows how the most recent gadolinium cross sections evaluations appear inadequate to provide accurate criticality calculations for a system with gadolinium fuel pins. In this article, a sensitivity and uncertainty analysis (S/U) has been performed to investigate the effect of gadolinium odd isotopes nuclear cross sections data on the multiplication factor of some LWR fuel assemblies.

The Patapur micro-watershed situated in semi-arid region needs effective management of resources for sustainable agriculture. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a semi distributed physically based model, was chosen and set up in the Patapur micro-watershed for sediment yield modeling. SWAT-CUP (SWAT-Calibration and Uncertainty Programs) was used for model calibration, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, following the Sequential Uncertainty Fitting (SUFI2) technique.

Calibration and validation are the two important processes needed to perform for physically based distributed watershed models before their use for hydrologic calculations. The present study was conducted to calibrate the SWAT model for Kunthipuzha basin using SUFI-2 algorithm in SWAT-CUP package. SUFI-2 algorithm accounts for most sources of uncertainties and it is also easy to handle.

A realistic new sediment–laden water prediction computer model was developed. In this model unsteady non-uniform flow computations were incorporated. Using this model, flooding flow–sediments were simulated and compared to earlier research including hydrologic engineering centre (HEC-series) computer models. Uncertain value of parameters and errors in flow–sediment transport equation in existing coupled flow–sediment models were studied.

Towards an uncertainty reduction framework for land-cover change prediction using possibility theory
This paper presents an approach for reducing uncertainty related to the process of land-cover change (LCC) prediction. LCC prediction models have, almost, two sources of uncertainty which are the uncertainty related to model parameters and the uncertainty related to model structure. These uncertainties have a big impact on decisions of the prediction model.

The corresponding neutron transport calculations are performed with the deterministic discrete-ordinates code NEWT. In addition, the Monte Carlo code KENO in multi-group mode is used to demonstrate a method with which the number of neutron histories per calculation run can be substantially reduced as compared to that in a calculation for the nominal case without uncertainties, while uncertainties and sensitivities are obtained with almost the same accuracy.

The effects of uncertainty factors on SIFs were deducted from sensitivity analyses and, based on the similarity and conservatism compared with detailed finite element analysis results, the R6 code, taking into account the applied internal pressure and combination of stress components, was recommended as the optimum procedure for SIF estimation.
