Many pharmacologically active compounds are chiral species, and their therapeutic or toxicological effects might differ between isomers. Herein, we develop a fast and sensitive chiral analysis methodology for the determination of eight pharmaceuticals, considered as emerging environmental pollutants and belonging to two different chemical classes, in wastewater and sludge samples.

Rhodococcus ruber strain Chol-4, a strain isolated from a sewage sludge sample, is able to grow in minimal medium supplemented with several compounds, showing a broad catabolic capacity. We have previously determined its genome sequence but a more comprehensive study of their metabolic capacities was necessary to fully unravel its potential for biotechnological applications.

The present investigation was conducted to study the effect of sewage sludge and cadmium on growth and quality features of marigold (Tagetes erecta L.). The experiment was conducted in Factorial Complete Randomized Design. The treatments consisted of four doses of sewage sludge (0, 5, 10 and 15 g kg -1 ) in combination with three doses of cadmium (0, 20 and 40 mg kg-1 ) taking three replications. The treatments were studied in three types of soils Alluvial, Red and Black soil.

An experiment was conducted during kharif 2013 and rabi 2013-14 to evaluate the best combination of organic and inorganic sources of nutrients for maximizing yield. Combined application of poultry manure 5 t ha-1 and 75% recommended dose of NPK recorded higher fruit yield (33.6 t ha-1 ) and curd yield (29.3 t ha-1 ) followed by combined application of sewage sludge 5 t ha-1 and 75% recommended dose of NPK.

Agricultural and horticultural applications of sewage sludge are becoming popular as a means of nutrient recycling in many areas of the world (Jacobs, 1981). Guidelines on application of sewage sludge should take account of many factors, such as sludge type, time and method of application (Shepherd, 1996).

Nitrogen is the key nutrient factor that influences soil fertility and productivity. It is the mineral nutrient that exists in different forms, but nitrate form is the most preferred form by plants. Irrespective of the form in which N is applied to soil, it undergoes transformation viz. mineralization (ammonification, nitrification), denitrification etc. by enzymes produced by micro organisms.

The excess usage of synthetic fertilizers with minimum application of organic inputs results into nutrient deficiencies, deterioration of soil and also causes environment pollution. It also affects the sustainability of agricultural production. Sustainable agricultural production includes the management of soil organic carbon, use of organic manure such as animal manure, green manure, crop residues, and sewage sludge. Since only organic manure cannot fulfill the nutrient demands of agriculture crops, hence integration of fertilizers and organic sources is the need of the hour.

This work proposes to assess the microbiological and physico-chemical characteristics and to quantify the heavy metals of the biosolids produced by the sewage treatment plant - STE, of the city of Toledo - State of Paraná - Brazil. The conclusion of this analysis is that the sewage sludge produced by the city's Sewage Treatment Plant can be categorized as a Type A sludge because it has low rates of total and thermotolerant coliforms.

The accumulation of Cr in soil is a major concern because of its possible phytotoxicity or increased movement of metals into food chain and the potential for surface and ground water contamination. Excessive metal accumulation in contaminated soil can result in decrease in soil microbiological activities, soil fertility and overall soil quality which may lead to reduction in yield.

Sewage sludge (SS), a byproduct of treated wastewater by sewage treatment plants (STPs) are rich in organic C, and other macro –micro nutrients, which if properly managed can be used to improve organic fertility in intensively cropped degraded soil. A field experiment was conducted to examine the role of sewage sludge from different sewage treatment plants with various doses of phosphorus on physicochemical and macronutrient in soil depth under (Vignaradiata L.).

Field experiment was conducted at University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore with an objective to enhance productivity of finger millet intercropping in organic system of production during Kharif 2006 and 2007. Different organic manures at 50 kg N equivalent used in the experiment are Farm yard manure (FYM), sewage sludge, poultry manure compost (PMC), urban garbage compost, enriched urban garbage compost and vermicompost (VC) compared to inorganic fertilizers alone. Irrigation water was provided during dry spells throughout the crop growth period.

Sewage sludge is the promising raw material for biosorbent preparation. In this work, we evaluated the heavy metals adsorption characteristics of alkali treated sewage sludge (ATSS) by equilibrium studies. The adsorption isotherms were fitted with Langmuir and Freundlich models. Comparing with untreated sewage sludge, the total adsorption capacity (qm) of ATSS (prepared with 0.125 mol/L NaOH) for Cd, Pb, Ni, increase d by 0.51, 0.70 and 0.32 mmol/g, respectively. When the NaOH concentration for ATSS preparation increase d from 0.125 mol/L to 0.
