Shelf life of strawberry

The research was carried out to study the effect of sulphur dioxide pads on shelf life of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) under ambient condition (24 ± 26°C) with six treatments. SO2 pads containing different mixtures of KMS and citric acid had no significant effect on the shelf life of strawberry.

The present study was measured the effects of chitosan and CaCl2 treatments on shelf-life of strawberry fruits under ambient condition for 3 days. The coated treatments had significantly reduced the loss of weight and firmness of fruits.

Drying of fruits is an economical and an effective preservation method practiced since ages by ancestors throughout the world. Strawberry is a seasonal fruit and is available in abundance during particular season of the year. It is a very delicate fruit with low shelf-life, hence needs proper preservation techniques. Preservation of strawberry through sun drying techniques results in poor quality and product contamination. Energy consumption and quality of dried product are critical parameters in the selection of drying process.

Oligochitosans (OCT) were prepared from chitosan (CTS) by gamma irradiation technique. The parameters affecting to the chitosan degradation were studied. And then, OCT nanoparticles wereformed using the method of tripolyphosphate (TPP) cross-linking. Effect of concentration and molecular weight of OCT, concentration of TPP on particle size of the formed OCT nanoparticles were also studied.
