Single cross hybrids in maize
-
A study was carried out using 48single cross experimental maize hybrids developed from 16 lines (with high test weight and per se performance) and three testers crossed in Line × Tester design and were evaluated at three diverse environments, viz. Arabhavi (Northern dry zone), Agriculture Research Stations of Nippani and Main Agricultural Research Station (MARS) Dharwad (Northern transition zone) in Karnataka, for their grain yield stability.

A new Single cross Pop corn hybrid IHPC-1203 was developed at Main Maize Research Station, AAU, Godhra, Gujarat and it was evaluated across the locations all over India during Kharif 2016 to Kharif 2018. This hybrid involves two diversified inbred parentsi.eIGPF-21 as female and IGPM-23 as male parent.

Genotype-environment interaction and stability analysis has been important for plant breeders and plays a vital role in identifying genotypes that are stable or unstable in each environment. Varieties that show low G x E interaction and high yield are desirable for crop breeders. The study was conducted in 2018 at six locations in India to determine the presence of G x E of 171 single cross maize genotypes and to use the GGE biplot methodology to determine grain yield performance and stability of the genotypes evaluated across six environments.

In the present study conducted at AICRP Maize, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, sixty single cross hybrids were produced by crossing twenty female inbred lines to three divergent inbred male testers in line x tester design. The parental inbred lines along with test cross hybrids, resistant check, susceptible check and hybrid checks were evaluated for their disease reaction against turcicum leaf blight under artificial epiphytotic condition.

Five maize inbred lines and their 10 direct crosses produced through half-diallel scheme were evaluated with two checks during kharif-2014 for grain yield and its component traits. The crosses namely JP25 W95 × CM-138 and CML-439 × CM-138 recorded higher level of economic heterosis for grain yield. Combining ability analysis suggested the preponderance of non-additive gene action for majority of the traits viz., grain yield, 100- kernel weight, ear length, ear girth and number of grain rows per cob.

A field experiment was conducted during 2002 at CCS University, Meerut to study the effect of environmental factors and seasons on plant growth, flowering, Synchronization and seed yield in Six inbreds/OPVs: CM135, CM136, CM137, CM138, CM500, CM600 and two single crosses: CM202xCM111 and CM400xCM300 were evaluated for five characters namely, plant height, Number of leaves per plant, tassel and silk emergence, duration of anthesis, duration of silking and seed yield.

The phyllosphere supports a large and complex bacterial community that varies both across plant species and geographical locations. Phyllosphere bacteria can have important effects on plant health. Many fungal diseases leads to important crop loss and due to limited antifungal availability and effectiveness in agriculture practices, it appears necessary to develop alternative control strategies.

The yield is a complex trait, which is highly influenced by the environment and hence indirect selection through component traits would be an advisable strategy to increase the efficiency of selection. Fifty two F1’ s generated by crossing 26 lines with 2 testers in line × tester fashion were evaluated in randomized block design along with three standard checks with two replications.

Study was carried out to determine the stability for grain yield of 20 maize hybrids in three environments viz., Dharwad, Sankeshwar and Nippani using Eberhart and Russel model. The single cross hybrids DMH 100-1, DMH 100-2, DMH 100-4, DMH 100-8, DMH 100-12 and DMH 100-16 were promising for majority of characters studied with high mean performance across the locations during summer.

The experiment comprised of six F1’s, which were selected based on the combinations of low yield × high yield and low ASI × high ASI. The selected six F1’s were crossed in full diallel mating design to synthesis 18 three way crosses was estimated and validated on the basis of performance of their constituent single crosses. Out of 18 hybrids, TWC 3 recorded lower days to tasseling and silking and hence it can be used further in breeding programme. While, TWC 4 (0.32), TWC 11 (0.5), TWC 9 (0.76), TWC 10 (0.79), TWC 14 (0.81) and TWC 5 (0.89) recorded least ASI.

A set of sixteen inbred lines were evaluated to assess the ability of inbred lines, they were crossed in half diallel mating design. A total of 120 single cross hybrids were developed and evaluated in simple lattice square design at K block experimental plots of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru. The observations were recorded on five randomly selected plants. Analyses of variances revealed that, all the hybrids were differed significantly for the traits under consideration which indicates the presence of genetic variability.

Chhattisgarh, the 26th state of the Indian Union came into existence on November 1st, 2000. In Chhattisgarh, maize is a kharif season crop and second most important crop next to paddy in terms of both area and production. The state has got very good potential for maize but the productivity is very low due to cultivation of open pollinated varieties (OPVs) and improper input management practices. The real potential can be realized by the adoption of hybrid maize especially single cross hybrids with full package of practices.
