Biotin is a commonly used supplement for hair, nail, and skin. Recent literature suggests that high-dose biotin therapy for neurological diseases like Multiple sclerosis can interfere with lab results that use biotin/streptavidin immunoassay, called biotin interference. Biotin interference can afect thyroid lab results, giving biochemical hyperthyroidism.

Large-scale trials have shown that hypofractionated adjuvant breast radiotherapy was as effective in terms of survival and local control as conventional fractionated radiotherapy, and acute toxicity was reduced with hypofractionated radiotherapy.

A novel device for supine positioning in breast radiotherapy for patients with large or pendulous breasts has been developed and tested in phase II studies. This trial is designed to assess the efficacy of the device to reduce skin toxicity and unwanted normal tissue dose in comparison to the current clinical standard for supine breast support during breast radiotherapy.

Birds have various plumage color patterns, and spot is a common phenotype. Herein, we conducted genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in a population of 225 ducks with different sized black spots to reveal the genetic basis of this phenomenon.

The dose perturbation effect of immobilization devices is often overlooked in intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for breast cancer (BC). This retrospective study assessed the dosimetric effects of supine immobilization devices on the skin using a commercial treatment planning system.

To identify predictive factors of radiation-induced skin toxicity in breast cancer patients by the analysis of dosimetric and clinical factors. In our experience dose inhomogeneity underneath G2 – G3 skin reactions seems to be the most important predictor for acute skin damage and in these patients more complex treatment techniques should be considered to avoid skin damage.

The present article reports on the laboratory examination of skin scraping sample collected from a camel clinically infected with dermatophyte infection. The samples were examined by direct microscopical examination by placing the skin scrapings and/or hairs in 20% KOH on a glass slide and gentle heating, without boiling. The dermatophyte identification was made based on the colony characteristics and microscopic features of the fungal isolates according to the methods. The present study revealed the presence of superficial dermatophyte skin infection in the affected camel.

Equine sarcoids are locally invasive, fibroblastic skin tumors and represent the most common skin tumor in equidae worldwide. The study was conducted on 8 clinical cases of equine having problem of sarcoid tumour which included 6 horses and 2 mules. The sarcoid growth was removed by surgical intervention under anaesthesia of xylazine and ketamine at the dose rate of 1mg and 2mg per kg body weight, respectively through intravenous route.

This study was conducted with an objective to determine the immunotoxic effect of sub acute exposure of selenium (Se) in broilers with special reference to the Dinitroflurobenzene (DNFB) contact skin sensitivity test and pathomorphological alterations in histoarchitecture of lymphoid organs. The chicks were intoxicated orally with sodium selenite @ 2, 6 and10 ppm respectively in diet, daily for 35 days. The present study exhibited significant depression of cell mediated immunity in Se treated broilers as measured by DNFB skin contact sensitization test.

Over the past few decades, microwave (MW) radiation has been widely used, and its biological effects have been extensively investigated. However, the effect of MW radiation on human skin biology is not well understood. We study the effects of pulsed high-power microwaves (HPMs) on melanoma (G361 and SK-Mel-31) and normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cells. A pulsed power generator (Chundoong) was used to generate pulsed HPMs (dominant frequency: 3.5 GHz). For treatment 1, 5, 15, and 45 shots are given to cells in which the electromagnetic energy of 0.

Two Jamunapari adult bucks of 2 and 3.5 years of age respectively were presented to Bai Sakrabai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals affiliated to Bombay Veterinary College, Parel, Mumbai with the history of necrosis of scrotal skin, chronic orchitis and pus discharge from testicles. On thorough clinical examination, it was revealed that in one buck scrotal sac was soft with partial necrotic changes and in another buck, it was completely necrosed. Complete scrotal ablation was performed under light sedation with diazepam administered at dose rate of 0.

Anovel photoprotectivemycosporinewas isolated fromthe lichenized ascomyceteCollema cristatum. Biological activity was measured in terms of protection against UV-B induced membrane destruction and pyrimidine dimer formation in cultured human keratinocytes, and prevention of UV-B induced erythema. It was found that the pure isolated compound prevented UV-B induced cell destruction in a dose-dependent manner, that the compound partially pre-vented pyrimidine dimer formation and completely preven-ted UV-B induced erythema when applied to the skin prior to irradiation....

A Abatement: Reducing the degree or intensity of, or eliminating, pollution. Abatement Debris: Waste from remediation activities. Absorbed Dose: In exposure assessment, the amount of a substance that penetrates an exposed organism's absorption barriers (e.g.,, skin, lung tissue, gastrointestinal tract) through physical or biological processes. The term is synonymous with internal dose. Absorption Barrier: Any of the exchange sites of the body that permit uptake of various substances at different rates (e.g., skin, lung tissue, and gastrointestinal-tract wall).

Complications Following Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Early Direct Chemoradiotoxicities The transplant preparative regimens commonly used cause a spectrum of acute toxicities that vary according to the specific regimen but frequently result in nausea, vomiting, and mild skin erythema (Fig. 108-1). Regimens that include high-dose cyclophosphamide can result in hemorrhagic cystitis, which can usually be prevented by bladder irrigation or with the sulfhydryl compound mercaptoethanesulfonate (MESNA); rarely, acute hemorrhagic carditis is seen.

Immunologic Effects Exposure to solar radiation causes local (inhibition of immune responses to antigens applied at the irradiated site) and systemic (inhibition of immune responses to antigens applied at remote unirradiated sites) immunosuppression. The action spectrum for UV-induced immunosuppression closely mimics the absorption spectrum of DNA. Pyrimidine dimers in LCs may inhibit antigen presentation. The absorption spectrum of epidermal urocanic acid closely mimics the action spectrum for UV-B-induced immunosuppression.
