The 1920s was prosperous for employers and employees. Despite a surplus of labor, employers created “industrial goodwill” with a variety of employee benefit programs. Scientific Management inspired social scientists and psychologists to study the workplace. Industrial Sociology began in the 1920s. The Social Gospel spawned the industrial betterment/welfare movement.

Studying the ways that people make sense of the world is impossible to do alone. We might assume that writing is a solitary act that we do sitting alone in our offices late at night, staring at our computers, spending too much time scratching our heads. But no one ever writes alone. We are social beings, even when we’re by ourselves. Not only are the words we use somebody else’s; most of our thoughts are too. EMILE DURKHEIM (1858–1917) remains a major figure in social science as a whole and he is unambiguously a ‘founding father’ of sociology. Whereas other social theorists from the classical period of sociology (1890–1920) were often somewhat ambiguous about their status as ‘sociologists’, Durkheim appears to have had a clear vision of the importance of building sociology as a science of social facts.

Simply put, this book is about how nature is ‘done’, how it is practised, how it materializes as an active partner in and through those practices. Perhaps, unlike many other volumes, I am not especially concerned here with how nature is imagined, represented, thought or conceived. Rather, imagining, representing and thinking are treated as activities which take their place alongside many other practices (like growing, infecting, digging, counting), some of which do not have people at their centre. This last point is crucial.
